Graphic Design Philosophy and Guidelines: Being Simple is Enough, Don't Go Overboard

05 Agustus 2024

In the application of design done through graphic design such as murals, logo designs, and illustrations one must remember that a design especially a design done for a corporation, a logo or poster must be in accordance with the guidelines that have been determined before publication. This is done so that there is consistency with the company brand in a post that contains a logo. Inconsistent logo or illustration design tends to make the image of a company not good.

Visual Communication Design is a concept that a person pays attention to. In Graphic Design, Visual Communication plays an important role as a form of conveying messages through a visual work. The stylistics of letters and their placement in Communication Science greatly affects the perception of the audience, and can create effective communication in an illustration work. Graphic Design is very influential in various aspects of communication ranging from product delivery, marketing, and political campaigns.

Through stereotypical public opinion, an Artist is also a Graphic Designer. However, the fact that an Artist works and earns money from selling his egoism means that it is a representation of his personality and idealism.

Visual Communication Design in the modern sense is a design produced through rationality. The rationality is based on what is needed at a certain time by a party. Graphic Designers work by command and client request, but that does not rule out the possibility of creating their own characterisation without any affiliation to anyone. However, this can only be realised if they have their own design style and already have great credibility.

A Graphic Designer in creating a work, acts based on the rationality of what is needed and where it is intended. A designer basically makes a purely visual concept. In creating a design, of course, a designer does not only apply his subjective idealism.

In his work, a Graphic Designer is tasked with directing clients as well as providing education on what design is optimal in the situation needed. This is because the majority of clients or companies want a logo that the public wants to understand. Graphic Design has a basic philosophy of "Enough is enough, don't overdo it", which means that a simple design makes it easy to convey messages to the audience without confusion. A clear and direct message can be understood quickly by anyone who sees it.

Through the work that has been delivered both in the form of books, brochures, flyer pamphlets, newspapers, and other visual communication designs that have been poured through the idea of a Graphic Designer, it can become a brand identity and delivery of a product to the public. This is in accordance with the explanation of M. Suyanto (2004) which states that in a design, it is advisable to balance the gimmick to be conveyed. It is not recommended in design to contain many elements that are too excessive so that the message to be conveyed is not obstructed. This skill in conveying something simple but containing aesthetics can include advertising and selling products, creating visual identities for institutions, products and companies.

The development of communication and information technology has brought new trends in the world of creative industries. The presence of digital technology and the internet affects visual communication design, these developments then lead to media competition. Then with the accessibility of many platforms used today and used by the majority of the public without any age limit, a concrete Graphic Designer will be the key to a design that will survive in this rapidly developing world. A design does not need to be excessive, just enough to get the message across.
