UNDIRA Student Examines Interpersonal Communication Patterns in the Mobile Legends Online Game Community

Communication functions not only as a bridge connecting mindsets between parties but also plays a vital role in strengthening solidarity and demonstrating both integrity and professionalism.

Communication is also undoubtedly supported by behavioral development and the cultivation of optimal attitudes; this is essential for social development and character building. One specific focus of social communication encompasses a concept known as Interpersonal Communication. Interpersonal Communication involves the exchange of information, ideas, and feelings within a scope of two or more people, whether face-to-face or online.

Observing technological developments has certainly opened the gates to expanded communication spaces. Digitalization, the Internet of Things (IoT), and the growth of Globalization—coupled with the phenomenon of the recent COVID-19 Pandemic—have further propelled Digital Communication Patterns through the adaptation of online ecosystems.

This has marked a shift in communication patterns, moving from primarily intimate face-to-face interactions to a majority of virtual interactions. One space currently experiencing a significant increase in communication due to technological advancements is the Video Game industry, specifically Online Video Game Communities.

As we understand, the Video Game ecosystem is no longer just a place to play games; it also supports a space for inter-group communication.

With the objective of uncovering communication patterns among Online Video Game players while simultaneously examining their competence in Interpersonal Communication, a student from the Communication Science Study Program at Universitas Dian Nusantara (UNDIRA) conducted research on the communication patterns of the "Mobile Legends Castle" Online Game Community in North Jakarta.

According to the Interpersonal Communication Competence Scale (ICCS) theoretical framework, Interpersonal Communication occurs through engagement with several personal aspects capable of fostering a conducive environment. These aspects support the community or personal image while creating a "safe haven," and include: Self-Disclosure, Empathy, Social Relaxation, Assertiveness, Altercentrism, Interaction Management, Expressiveness, Supportiveness, Immediacy, and Environmental Control.

With a total of 270 respondents and using a Purposive Sampling data collection technique via Google Forms targeting a demographic age of 15 to 35 years, it was revealed that the supportive and relaxed environment found in Video Game sessions actually leads to an improvement in Interpersonal Communication patterns between players.

Not only did respondents show a better sense of openness, but with the anonymity provided by the Online Video Game space, they were also able to reveal ideas and express themselves better, albeit within certain limits.

The study by the Universitas Dian Nusantara (UNDIRA) Communication Science student regarding the Mobile Legends Castle Online Game Community confirms that the digital game ecosystem functions as more than mere entertainment; it also participates in training Interpersonal Communication skills. The research simultaneously proves that strengthening solidarity through the sense of belonging within the community ecosystem can influence openness and progressively improve Interpersonal Communication skills.
