Jakarta’s Colorful Charms Through the Lens of Students: UNDIRA Communication Students Express Their Aspirations

Jakarta, June 20, 2025 — After much anticipation, students from the Communication Studies Program at Universitas Dian Nusantara (UNDIRA) have successfully held their annual photography exhibition once again.
This exhibition, now in its fourth edition, serves as the Semester Project for Communication students and is conducted every academic year. Carrying the theme "Warna-Warni Jakarta" (The Colors of Jakarta), students showcased their photographic works capturing the life and dynamic atmosphere of Jakarta, exhibited at the 6th floor hall of UNDIRA’s West Jakarta campus.
According to Dr. Novida Irawan, S.I.Kom, M.Si., Head of the Communication Studies Program, this exhibition is part of the academic assessment aligned with the Semester Credit System (SKS) and the Semester Learning Plan (RPS). Each student’s work is assessed based on a structured evaluation process.
"Fundamentals of photography remain the key reference, particularly in composition and lighting, which hold their own artistic value. However, assessments are conducted objectively, and there is always room for improvement. This is an essential part of the educational process," he explained.
He further added that besides fulfilling academic requirements, this exhibition also serves as a creative outlet for students—a space for sustained artistic expression and a platform for young people to communicate with society.
"This fourth exhibition has run much more smoothly and vibrantly. As a promotional effort for the Communication Program, showcasing these works clearly highlights student capability, while also serving as part of their public engagement project. Beyond cultural appreciation and creative expression, the exhibition also builds the students’ portfolios," he added.
Mrs. Anna Nurjanah, S.I.Kom., M.A., Secretary of the Communication Studies Program, emphasized that the exhibition is a concrete implementation of the university’s Project-Based Learning (PBL) approach. It not only introduces students to the fundamentals of photography, but also marks the beginning of more specialized projects based on their concentrations, such as Public Relations, broadcasting, media production, and advertising.
"Currently, the photography course covers all concentrations. However, as students advance into their specific areas of interest—such as PR, broadcasting, and others—they will be guided into more specialized topics like media production, news broadcasting, television production, marketing communication (marcomm), and advertisement creation. The materials will then be tailored accordingly," she explained.
Dr. Novida Irawan also highlighted the program's commitment to strengthening industry collaboration, especially in the rapidly growing broadcasting sector.
"UNDIRA’s Communication Studies Program has established various partnerships with industry players, including national broadcasters like RRI. We are also actively seeking collaboration with agencies to support our student internship program. In line with national education policy, at least 10% of total students are required to take part in internships—either through the Merdeka Belajar-Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) framework or independent placements."
"Therefore, expanding industry cooperation through creative expressions like this photography project remains one of our key priorities, as we aim to prepare students for a brighter and professional future," he concluded.
