Getting to Know the World of Work, Here are Lists of Abbreviations in Worklife

In the world of work, there are several terms that workers must know in order to support the work system or knowledge gained so as not to be left behind on crucial information provided by the company. Some of these terms will be related to the level of work that employees undergo. In addition, understanding common abbreviations shows that a person has a good knowledge and understanding of the industry or field of work, which increases their credibility and professionalism.

As a graduate or student who is participating in an internship programme at a company, the following terms are certainly things that must be known to help with work direction. 

  1. Standard Operating Procedure (SOP)

An SOP, or Standard Operating Procedure, is a document that contains detailed instructions on how to perform a specific task or process to ensure consistency and quality in its execution. SOPs aim to provide clear guidance to employees or workers, so that each step in the process can be done the same way each time. 

With SOPs in place, organisations can improve efficiency, minimise errors, ensure regulatory compliance, and provide effective training tools for new employees. SOPs also serve as an important tool in risk management and operational audits, helping to ensure that all procedures are performed according to established standards.

  1. Employment Letter (SK)

The SK contains important information such as the name of the recipient of the letter, the position or task assigned, the period of assignment, and the responsibilities and authority attached to the position. This document also often includes the effective date and is signed by an authorised official in the organisation.

The Work Letter in the world of Civil Servants (PNS) also functions as proof of appointment to the status of Civil Servant as well as a requirement for the issuance of a full salary for a civil servant. According to information from Kompas media, a civil servant when still going through the CPNS selection stage only gets 80% of his full salary and each civil servant has a different salary level and in which ministry a person is placed. SKPNS also includes the class placement and position that a person will occupy after passing the CPNS selection, starting from gol. 4d to gol. 1a before the selection to enter the functional position test and later Echelon. After each test the SKPNS will be updated.  

  1. Key Performance Indicator (KPI)

KPI is a recapitulation of the performance of each employee or unit staff in carrying out their work. KPI is a scale used to measure the effectiveness and success of a person or team in achieving predetermined goals. 

In the marketing world, Key Performance Indicator also serves as a marker of how good a person's sales performance is within a monthly period or before the closing of the book for reporting to the Head of Sales. Data from KPIs provides important information for management in making strategic and operational decisions to drive the progress of the organisation's divisions.

  1. Probation Period

Probation Period is a trial period for new employees on their work performance in a company. In general, the Probation Period lasts between three months to one year. During this period, new employees will get the opportunity to show their performance and be tested whether the things that have been done or conveyed during the interview and on the Curriculum Vitae (CV) match the work performance that has been done. 

During the Probation Period a new employee will generally still receive a salary according to the contract that has been determined, but in some companies benefits such as BPJS will only be given or can be disbursed in the fourth or seventh month. The Probation Period is also a period where employee attentiveness and attendance needs to be maintained as well as possible. 

  1. Stakeholders

Stakeholders are individuals, groups, or organisations that have an interest in or influence over a project, company, or business decision. They can come from inside or outside the organisation and can influence or be influenced by the outcome of the activity or project being undertaken. A good understanding and management of stakeholders is critical to the success of a project or organisation.

Stakeholders tend to refer to external parties who play a role in deferring the allocation of funds to the company and have a direct interest in the performance and success of the organisation. 

  1. Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)

Memorandum of Understanding is a form of agreement that is intended between one institution and external parties as a form of cooperation. In the agreement there are several things that are brought along with the agreement on the collaboration. 

In the academic sphere, the MoU serves as a form of detail that allows students, lecturers and institutions to benefit in the form of student exchange programmes, knowledge sharing and periodic Curriculum Review and Visiting Lecture.

  1. Verklaring

Verklaring or Parklaring is a Dutch term meaning "statement" or "declaration". The term is often used in legal and administrative contexts to refer to an official document that contains a written statement of a particular fact, situation or status.

Verklaring is also a letter given to a staff when there is a resignation or resignation that contains the performance of an employee while working in a company. It is also usually used to disburse BPJS Ketenagakerjaan funds. Verklaring can only be issued by a company to an employee when they have worked for a year.

  1. Letter of Recommendation

A Letter of Recommendation is a written document by someone, usually a supervisor, professor, or co-worker, who gives a positive assessment of a person's qualifications, character, and performance. This letter is usually used to support one's application for employment, further education, or other opportunities after resignation. Generally, this recommendation will be obtained through a request to a higher-up.

After explaining some of the definitions of the above terms related to the world of work, it is hoped that job applicants and new workers will know what the function and definition of each term is. This knowledge not only helps in carrying out daily tasks but also gives confidence in interacting with colleagues and superiors. As part of preparing to enter the workforce or advance their career, it is important for individuals to be familiar with these terms to support their professional success.
