Harmony Towards Unity: Togetherness Under The Legacy of Prophet Muhammad

15 September 2024

As is well known, September 16, 2024, will coincide with the birthday of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), commonly known as Mawlid al-Nabi. This celebration has been observed since the Fatimid Dynasty in Egypt, more precisely since the 12th century AD. At that time, the Mawlid was introduced as part of the commemoration of various important figures in Islam, including Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), with some historical accounts indicating Sultan Al-Muzaffar as the founder of this holiday.

Over time, this celebration has been embraced and commemorated by many Muslim communities across the world in various forms, such as religious lectures, collective prayers, and festivals, all conducted to honor this important occasion.

Mawlid itself, as a holiday marking the birth of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), symbolizes many things, particularly as a reminder of the Prophet’s life and legacy. Although he no longer walks among his people, he left behind a rich history, one part of which is the name “Muhammad,” frequently chosen as a reference by many.

In Western literature, Prophet Muhammad’s history has been studied and his character has been used as a reference in their writings. Several modern historians and scholars of comparative religion, such as Karen Armstrong and Bernard Lewis, have discussed Prophet Muhammad and his impact beyond the Islamic context in their works.

In daily life, his name continues to inspire, frequently chosen by parents for their children. In Islamic tradition, many children born between 1990 and 2010 were given the name "Muhammad." According to data from RRI, around 1.8 million boys in Indonesia have been named “Muhammad.” The existence of a name can serve as a powerful identifier for a group and can become a distinctive characteristic. In this regard, it is well-established that the name of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) has left a legacy or historical reminder.

His name has even been referenced in Western literature and other religious studies. In the work of John of Damascus, for instance, Prophet Muhammad is mentioned as a new leader.

Although Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) has passed, it is important to remember that he left behind a lasting legacy as the Seal of the Prophets (Khatam an-Nabiyyin), meaning the final or completing prophet. As the last prophet, he delivered and perfected the revelations of previous prophets, fulfilling the teachings of the Qur'an. Thus, his name will always serve as a signature in both teachings and as a name, strengthening and deepening the bonds of humanity in recognition of his exemplary role as a Prophet.
