Opportunities and Challenges for Libraries as Access Points to Knowledge in the Digital Age and Society 5.0

Dian Nusantara University Library in collaboration with the DKI Jakarta Provincial Library and Archives Office held the UNDIRA #1 Perpus Seminar with the theme ‘Opportunities and Challenges of Libraries as Doors to Access All Knowledge in the Digital Age and Society 5.0’ on 17 July 2024 at the Tanjung Duren Campus Hall Jakarta. In this seminar, Dian Nusantara University Library and the DKI Jakarta Provincial Library and Archives Office presented 3 speakers, namely Ir. Margono Sugeng, M.Sc. (Vice Chancellor I of Dian Nusantara University), Mrs Deine Pangalila, S.Sos., Msi. (Associate Expert Librarian of the National Library of the Republic of Indonesia) and Mrs Irma Irawati Ibrahim, S.S., M.Kom (Chairperson of the Indonesian Higher Education Library Forum DKI Jakarta region).
The event was also attended by the Head of the DKI Jakarta Provincial Library and Archives Office Drs. Firmansyah, M.Pd. and his staff, Vice Rector III Dr. Ir. Muhammad Hasanuddin Thoyieb, MM. and Head of the Dian Nusantara University Library Bureau Mr. Rengga Sendrian, M.Hum. The event was also attended by representatives from the Department in the DKI Jakarta area. The seminar was attended by 132 participants both offline and online.
This seminar was opened by a Keynote Speech from the Head of the DKI Jakarta Provincial Library and Archives Office Drs. Firmansyah, M.Pd. he explained the many benefits of library existence in today's digital era. Because it can reach many people who can benefit from literacy in the present. Continued by Ir. Margono Sugeng, M.Sc. Vice Rector I of Dian Nusantara University who explained the future plans for the Dian Nusantara University Library in the future, where there will be a more contemporary library concept with a lot of collaboration with various sectors, such as the concept of a Café Library.
Then, the presentation was continued by Mrs Irma Irawati Ibrahim, S.S., M.Kom. Chairperson of the Indonesian Higher Education Library Forum in the DKI Jakarta region). She explained the library industry revolution with a human-centric approach and advanced technologies such as cloud computing, AI with big data, augmented reality, and collaborative robots. Library evolution from manual reading system to computerisation to 24/7 access era in web 4.0. Implementation of 4.0 connected libraries through digital applications replacing traditional models and selecting 4.0 technologies as needed. Industry 5.0 integrates advanced technology with a human-centric approach, utilising librarians' knowledge to improve reading room efficiency with cloud, AI, big data, augmented reality and collaborative robots. Cloud-based machine learning applications enhance library services with advanced data analysis and personalised recommendations for users.
Finally, Mrs Deine Pangalila, S.Sos., Msi. Associate Expert Librarian of the National Library of the Republic of Indonesia emphasised the importance of improving libraries in higher education so that they are not outdated. They must meet national standards, become centres of technological advancement and civilisation, and strengthen cooperation with universities to support students' learning independence. These libraries not only provide access to materials and information, but also manage collections well, improve information literacy, and use information technology to preserve library materials. Thus, the strategic role of libraries in higher education in supporting education, research, and services for the academic community is assured.
This event received a positive response from all participants, and this can be seen by the many who want to ask questions in the question and answer session. With the implementation of this event, it is hoped that the UNDIRA Perpus Seminar #1 can be an inspiring and informative forum for participants to understand and face the opportunities and challenges faced by libraries in the digital era and Society 5.0. With the collaboration between Dian Nusantara University and the DKI Jakarta Provincial Library and Archives Office, we hope to create constructive discussions and innovative solutions that can be applied in optimising the role of libraries as the main access point for knowledge in today's modern society. Hopefully, this event will provide a deeper understanding and enhance ongoing collaboration between educational and government institutions in facing future challenges.
