Tips for a Healthy Work Life: How to Avoid Burnout and Improve Teamwork

28 November 2024

The two forms of mental fatigue most commonly experienced by Generation Z, burnout and boredom, have become increasingly popular topics of discussion. According to CNN Indonesia in 2021, these issues have grown more prevalent both during and after the COVID-19 pandemic.

Burnout and boredom are not solely caused by workplace pressures but can also stem from repetitive daily routines, lack of self-appreciation, excessive ambition, and even unhealthy personal habits (such as neglecting self-care). These conditions often develop gradually and are not immediately apparent.

Common symptoms include: Physical: fatigue despite adequate sleep, headaches, stomach issues, or appetite changes. These symptoms may lead to psychological side effects such as;decreased performance, negative attitudes toward oneself or others, excessive stress, and even depression.

Unfortunately, many people underestimate these issues, often advising sufferers to "stay positive" or "hide their weaknesses." However, there are effective solutions to address burnout and boredom:

  1. Seek Social Support

Connecting with trusted friends and family can provide emotional motivation and foster beneficial collaboration. It’s essential to prioritize quality over quantity in relationships. While social interaction is a basic human need, setting boundaries based on individual preferences is equally important to maintain healthy interactions.

  1. Live with Purpose

Aligning activities and work with personal values and personality traits can enhance productivity. As the saying goes, "They do what they are good at best," meaning individuals perform exceptionally when they engage with passion and authenticity.

This concept was highlighted by Ir. Bagus Setiawan during the second graduation ceremony at Universitas Dian Nusantara. He introduced the idea of Ikigai as a way for young people to navigate life. Understanding one’s purpose and role helps provide direction amidst the uncertainties of modern life.

  1. Engage in Team-Building Activities

Occasionally, divisions within a workplace can organize team bonding events or competitions to break free from monotonous routines. Such activities create unique moments that not only support team building but also strengthen trust among colleagues.

  1. Travel to Unexplored Places

Taking a step back from routine through travel can be an effective way to combat boredom. Use vacations or leave days to visit places you’ve always wanted to explore.

Traveling offers new experiences that broaden one’s perspective, refreshing mental capacity and boosting productivity and innovation upon returning to daily routines.

  1. Create a To-Do List Beyond Routine Tasks

By creating a structured list of activities, individuals can keep track of what they want to accomplish. A to-do list provides a clear guide and prevents one from feeling stuck in repetitive routines.

Completing tasks from the list provides satisfaction and motivation. This can reduce the monotony often associated with work or daily activities. Checking off completed tasks gives a psychological boost, helping individuals feel productive.

  1. Work with Passion

It’s no surprise that people tend to excel when doing something they enjoy and are skilled at. Dr. Ir. Hasanudin Thoyieb, MM., Vice Rector III of Universitas Dian Nusantara, emphasized that when someone works with wholehearted dedication, they can channel their energy and focus into their tasks effectively.

Recognizing and addressing burnout and boredom in the workplace can improve routines, productivity and teamwork through social events and casual communication. By identifying the root causes of fatigue, individuals can seek solutions promptly and bounce back to lead their lives with greater purpose and efficiency.
