Before Visual, Audio Speaks for Society: Voicing Indonesia's Aspirations Together

10 September 2025

Radio is a device that may no longer be unfamiliar to all of us. Radio existed long before social media or television that presents visual information. Essentially, all forms of information can be accessed by humans, but as times evolve, the role of radio seems to be increasingly diminishing among the public.

Over time, radio technology continues to support progress in advancing the Indonesian nation toward the direction of "Sovereign together, prosperous people, advanced Indonesia."

UNDIRA friends, radio is also quite mobile to be carried around and can even reach the farthest spaces. UNDIRA friends, especially Electrical Engineering colleagues, must have studied the concept of waves. Radio waves in the form of Amplitude Modulation (AM) or Frequency Modulation (FM), which differ from VHF or UHF waves, can transmit signals better without interference because they have long wavelengths.

Combined with the role of various radio media today that are moving toward integration, accessibility, and bringing inclusivity of access through various devices, radio is now not only found in large stereo speakers but also in cars and applications.

However, one of the issues through technological development (as well as AI) also includes the authenticity of content provided by radio. Now with Text-to-Speech technology, radio broadcasters can replace live hosts with AI voices.

Nevertheless, ethical codes that promote the use of voice and regulations for using generative voice exist. Not only is human presence considered more authentic, but from a professional and ethical scale, humans can present information more naturally.

Therefore, radio is also a carrier of 'climate change.' But UNDIRA friends, climate change here does not only focus on weather information, but also on the social climate in society. The existence of radio has a significant impact, especially in Indonesia—where with the scattered placement of population separated by oceans, radio is very beneficial toward and after the independence era.

To further boost about the knowledge regarding the usage of radio and other related broadcasting tools, Dian Nusantara University (UNDIRA) is present by balancing between technology learning and ethical codes (humanitarian)—supporting inclusive scientific development. UNDIRA also has supporting facilities such as the Communication Science Laboratory and Radio Room, which certainly enable students to get on-site learning experiences.

However, the learning offered by UNDIRA is not limited to on-site learning; students also have the opportunity to go directly to the field to understand the ins and outs of the broadcasting world.

On June 1, 2024, through the MoU that has been realized between UNDIRA and Radio Republik Indonesia (RRI), UNDIRA students had the opportunity to conduct visitations and apply the broadcasting knowledge they had learned. In addition, the collaboration between UNDIRA and RRI enables students to carry out internship activities at RRI.

The available internship programs are very beneficial for supporting student competencies. One program that has been implemented is the Voice of Indonesia (VOI) Program. The VOI Program provides a platform for students to learn broadcasting procedures with international coverage. In addition, this program also organizes media visits in the form of outreach activities and educational workshops in the broadcasting field.

Together with National Radio Day, which falls on September 11, 2025, let us emphasize once again the broadcasting spirit that expresses aspirations and originality in creating works. Happy National Radio Day, may we all uphold freedom like radio signals floating in the archipelago's sky.
