Why Complicate Matters? Here Are 3 Tips to Master Your Presentation
A presentation serves as an interactive method for orally conveying information and data to an audience. The utilization of presentations as a medium for delivering ideas is prevalent in both the professional and academic spheres. Within the academic ecosystem, the ability to present is considered a fundamental obligation for students.
Furthermore, a presentation acts as a form of accountability regarding the mastery of ideas and materials proposed by students, whether in final projects (project-based), internship reports, or undergraduate theses (skripsi).
A presentation is not merely a task to "get over with" to receive a grade and await revisions from a lecturer. Essentially, a presentation is an extension of individual or group ideas regarding a specific opinion or subject. Moreover, the manner in which students deliver a presentation significantly contributes to building their future personal brand.
Common Challenges Here are several common issues that may resonate with UNDIRA students when creating or delivering a presentation:
-
Creative Block: Whether struggling to create the optimal design layout or finding it difficult to structure simple explanations.
-
Complexity Bias (Overcomplicating Subjects): In an attempt to make a presentation as perfect as possible, we tend to convolute explanations that should be straightforward.
-
Overly Dense Research Topics: Research topics that are too heavy tend to prolong the creation time and complicate the brainstorming process regarding which segments to include.
-
Audience Intimidation: It is entirely natural to feel intimidated by the audience, whether you are a novice or a reserved individual. Even outgoing personalities can feel pressured when facing a large and diverse audience.
To ensure your presentation does not appear tedious, here are several tips for UNDIRA students to consider:
1. Construct Simple, Effective, yet Meaningful Designs and Explanations
View each slide as a page in a textbook that balances visual elements with text.
Avoid the use of convoluted language within a slide, as this tends to create unnecessary difficulties for the presenter. Regarding design and color selection, choose background colors or fonts that provide contrast without being overly glaring. Remember, you are creating a presentation, not aggressive "clickbait." Use an aesthetic yet clean color palette, and if possible, select specific icons to represent certain details.
2. Utilize Media and Body Language, and Treat Your Presentation as Storytelling
Remember, friends of UNDIRA, you are not robots when presenting. The audience consists of human beings, just like us, the presenters.
Your presentation is the packaging of your own personal brand! Master it and enjoy the process. Treat your presentation as a form of storytelling; frame your material as a narrative with an engaging plot. Support that story with the use of visually captivating media, rather than burdening the audience's memory with excessive details. If you rely too heavily on minute details, you may reach burnout faster or miss important points due to panic.
3. Self-Worth Matters
A presentation is not merely about projecting vocal decibels in front of an audience. How you position yourself during a presentation—your sense of self-worth—is also a critical factor.
Self-encouragement indirectly creates the impression that "I can do this!" If you sound quiet and awkward, it not only dampens your own spirit but also renders the presentation less credible and disrupts your communicative confidence.
