Isra Mikraj: Beyond a Journey's End, A Moment for the Fortification of Character and Faith

15 Januari 2026

In observance of the 27th of Rajab, the Islamic community commemorates Isra Mikraj, the momentous journey of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) from the Masjid al-Haram to the Masjid al-Aqsa. This event constitutes not merely tangible evidence of the Omnipotence of Allah SWT, but also a historic imperative designed to strengthen the bond between the Messenger and his Ummah through the propagation of faith.

Fundamentally, beyond the historical narrative recounting the Prophet’s journey accompanied by Archangel Gabriel (Jibril), Isra Mikraj stands as empirical proof that a true journey transcends mere physical displacement from point A to point B.

The profound significance of travel is vividly delineated in the narrative of Isra Mikraj. During this expedition, Prophet Muhammad SAW encountered extraordinary phenomena, ranging from the sublime to the harrowing, serving as admonitions and pedagogical lessons for us all.

In the ascent towards Sidratul Muntaha, the Prophet was presented with a vivid depiction of Hell and its inhabitants. He witnessed firsthand the retribution for earthly transgressions such as adultery, usury (riba), and tyranny—a distressing spectacle that undoubtedly evoked deep sorrow within his heart.

Furthermore, the Prophet confronted additional obstacles, including hostility from the Quraysh and the interference of a Jinn prominent in legend, Ifrit, who attempted to obstruct the path with a torch of fire. It was only through a specific supplication taught by Archangel Gabriel—serving to extinguish the fire and repel the entity—that Prophet Muhammad SAW was safeguarded from Ifrit’s malice.

Yet, the journey was not solely defined by the witnessing of sorrow; the Prophet was also invited to behold the tranquil majesty of Allah’s creation. The expedition gained further depth through his encounters with preceding Prophets. Here, a mutual exchange of wisdom occurred, notably when Prophet Moses (Musa AS) offered a realistic perspective regarding human capacity. Nevertheless, Prophet Muhammad SAW maintained his conviction that the future and disposition of humanity remain within the sovereign will of Allah SWT.

Approaching the conclusion of the journey, the Prophet’s sorrow was thoroughly cleansed upon witnessing the beauty of Paradise—the eternal reward promised to those who perform righteous deeds and live in a state of perpetual gratitude. This blissful vision brought him profound happiness and serenity.

The expedition culminated at Sidratul Muntaha, the highest boundary unreached by any other being. There, Prophet Muhammad SAW underwent a sublime spiritual experience that further solidified the nobility of his character, establishing him as the eternal moral "compass" guiding the Islamic community until the end of time.

Through this narrative, we learn to comprehend the duality of joy and sorrow inherent in existence. Although our life’s journey is not always devoid of adversity, every experience—whether favorable or adverse—serves as the quintessential teacher. Ultimately, these experiences are intended to strengthen our bonds with one another and the Creator, guiding us to discover the answers sought at the journey's end as morally upright human beings.
