Dissecting the Role of Journalism and Principles of Information Dissemination in the Era of AI Disruption, UNDIRA Communication Science Program Hosts Book Review and Talk Show
Saturday, November 29, 2025 – Universitas Dian Nusantara (UNDIRA) held a Book Review Seminar and Talk Show titled "AI Disruption: When Journalism is Hijacked by Algorithms" (Disrupsi AI Ketika Jurnalisme Dibajak Algoritma). The event took place at the UNDIRA Tanjung Duren Campus, West Jakarta, and was attended by over 150 students from the Communication Science study program. Organized by the Communication Science Program, this activity represents the manifestation of the younger generation's critical thinking regarding the sustainability of media as a source of information that is not only popular but also valid and accountable.
This Talk Show featured a distinguished guest, Mr. Apni Jaya Putra, S.Sos., an expert journalist, the author of the book "AI Disruption: When Journalism is Hijacked by Algorithms," and an AI Specialist known for developing AI presenters for tvOne.

Dr. Novida Irawan, M.Si., Head of the Communication Science Study Program, expressed her appreciation for the successful organization of this event. She emphasized that UNDIRA Communication Science students should utilize this moment to broaden their understanding of communication and media. Novida added that discussions like this are expected to foster new perspectives regarding technological developments.
UNDIRA Vice Rector III, Dr. Ir. Muhammad Hasan Toyib, M.M., who was also present at the Book Review, emphasized that the development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a massive phenomenon that cannot be avoided.
“Various professions are now beginning to intersect with AI, which has emerged from scientific advancements, including human-created algorithms and algebra. However, we must truly embrace the existence of AI as a friend, not as a competitor or an enemy capable of sidelining human development,” he stated.
The Book Review and Talk Show segment was led by the Director of Cooperation, Public Relations, and Marketing of UNDIRA, Mr. Imam Priyono, S.T., M.M., who served as the moderator. During the main segment, Mr. Apni explained that society is entering a "post-truth" era where information spreads very rapidly.
Furthermore, the circulating information often lacks truth value. Mr. Apni also explained that AI can influence the social media era, where it has the capacity to shape public opinion regarding news stories. He clarified that AI is not merely a tool for searching for information; rather, AI is an Agent useful for influencing the information delivered to the public.
Moreover, he explained several principles regarding the use of AI as a means of information and journalism, particularly from the perspectives of authenticity and legality—topics that are frequently debated. He stated that Copyright is currently a major point of contention in the use of AI. This is due not only to illegal data extraction but also to data collection methods that society deems unethical and unprofessional.
“The data presented by AI is data taken from search engines like Google. AI obtains this data by crawling through website pages, ultimately providing a conclusion of data from various sources through text, images, and even video. For some parties, this can be misused, thereby reducing information validation or potentially instilling false public perceptions, which can have fatal consequences,” he remarked.

In a doorstop interview session, Mr. Apni Jaya Putra, S.Sos. added that there must be a balance between the theory and empirical data obtained via AI and the actual field data available. This ensures that students understand not only the theory but also the practice. Although AI possesses many advantages such as being Generative, facilitating the search for inspiration, curating information, and serving as a learning medium—humans must strictly maintain control over the information provided by AI to filter it correctly.

One actionable step is to re-verify the sources provided by AI during the writing process of papers or journals. This helps students avoid plagiarism when working on papers, creating journals, or completing other assignments that require research skills. The theme of this talk show was chosen to nurture students' confidence in the assignments and papers they create. It also aims to support students' Digital Literacy so that they are prepared to face the Post-truth and AI era more wisely and utilize more qualified sources.
