The Influence of Language and Context on Perception and Response in Social Media and Social Interactions

04 Desember 2025

Language can be likened to a gigantic, ever-expanding library. With the rise of globalization and the acceleration of information technology, language absorption can occur in a split second from various sources. These sources can be categorized as either human or non-human entities.

In terms of non-human language absorption, we encounter the role of search engines like Google, which constantly recommend new vocabulary, or Artificial Intelligence (AI), which guides us in mastering language through systematically arranged datasets.

On the other hand, the human aspect offers a language learning scheme that is interactive and tends to be more critical. We learn language through conversation and social interaction; thus, we do not merely learn diction, but also expand our social networks. However, within this learning scheme, many of us are unfamiliar with, over-generalize, or completely misapply and misassociate the meaning of certain terms.

For example, we tend to misperceive loanwords such as "loyal" and "royal." "Loyal" fundamentally describes a person's characteristics in social relationships—both formal and non-formal—and symbolizes a spirit of integrity, professionalism, and responsibility.

This differs from the concept of "royal" (as often used in the local vernacular), which is frequently emphasized with a negative connotation related to materialism and a wasteful lifestyle. However, fundamentally, the word "royal" itself refers to a social order and symbolizes generosity.

It is common to encounter generalized or discordant word usage on social media, which subsequently produces widespread negative connotations. It would be prudent for us to also understand the full context of a vocabulary word.

Therefore, knowledge of semantic meaning and the competence to combine languages are highly relevant, especially today when the flow of information is so rapid. Language comprehension can be achieved through various methods, such as code-mixing (mixing languages) to explore context, or using specific applications like Duolingo.

Mr. Todo Faraday Sibuea S.Pd., M.Hum., Head of the English Literature Study Program, commented that differences in language and the context received significantly influence our perception of the social world as well as how we respond.

“It is indeed important to observe language development and wordplay with specific terms, especially in foreign languages. This demonstrates human creativity in creating a cultural ecosystem born from cultural dynamics and our ability to process words,” he stated.

“However, at the same time, we must also train our language competence and comprehension so that we are not only capable of pronouncing words but also possess an understanding of those words according to their context. We can practice by discussing with friends around us to enhance our understanding, allowing these skills to develop properly,” he continued.

In conclusion, language mastery goes beyond mere vocabulary memorization. The ability to distinguish nuances in meaning is crucial, especially in cross-language communication where even a slight shift in context can completely alter the intensity of the communication. Realizing the urgency of this deep competence, the English Literature Study Program at Universitas Dian Nusantara (UNDIRA) serves as a strategic platform for forming critical and adaptive linguists.

Through a curriculum designed specifically with a concentration on English Language and Translation, UNDIRA equips students not only with technical translation skills but also with logical and cultural sensitivity to bridge meaning gaps in the global era. The UNDIRA English Literature Study Program is also equipped with top-tier learning standards utilizing Wordfast LLC and YVES Champollion.
