Applying Maslow's Pyramid Theory to Address the Challenges Facing the Alpha Generation

29 Juni 2024

In life, Generation Alpha often faces several challenges in their daily activities ranging from the existence of procrastination, cultural pressures such as the emphasis on the concept of the 'Sandwich Generation' and also other factors such as the pressure of personal fulfilment. Therefore, there is a need for the implementation of priorities that are needed by Generation Alpha, this is because Generation Alpha needs a framework to understand and fulfil their basic needs so as not to be trapped in FOMO and the existence of economic panic.

Moreover, time management in the majority of cases often applies a deadline system to do other activities first, which will lead to procrastination and panic if the assignment deadline time is approaching. This results in a lot of neglect of basic needs such as eating on time to a lack of care for the surrounding environment, especially for self and inventory.

A fulfilment of needs, humans need priority mapping that will help organise activities. One of the things that can be done to process priorities is to open mindfulness. With mindfulness, a person will be able to see the conditions around him as a form of reflection for his own needs.

Psychologically, one also needs an open heart to learn "The need to be vulnerable" refers to the importance of being open and honest about our weaknesses, feelings, and uncertainties to others. It emphasises that by allowing things to flow naturally, the potential for increased stress arising from procrastination and FOMO. Being vulnerable also reminds us that life is not limited to ourselves and that co-operation is one way to overcome challenges for Generation Alpha, especially those with individualistic traits.

Every individual has needs that are arranged in a hierarchy from the most basic level to the highest level. Maslow's thinking about individual needs is the foundation of the focus of fulfilling human needs, but its application for educational purposes does not seem to have received full attention. Of course, in fulfilling needs there are three categories of needs namely; Primary, Secondary and Tertiary. Maslow assumes that there are 5 (five) groups of needs, namely: (1) physiological needs; (2) security needs; (3) love and belonging needs; (4) appreciation needs; and (5) self-actualisation needs.

In this case, Abraham Maslow's pyramid theory is the basis that meets basic human needs in order to fulfil the freedom for self-actualisation. The hierarchical level of daily needs coupled with the development of social media coverage can lead to FOMO which will result in over consumption behaviour through panic buying culture. Maslow explained that the lowest needs must be met first so that there is harmony with physiological needs such as food and hygiene, then humans can continue to fulfil the next need to fulfil a sense of security.

The main point before further self-fulfilment is physiological needs or physical needs. Maslow states that these primary needs are necessary to maintain basic life before one's effort to go further in life. Without fulfilling these needs, individuals will face difficulties in focusing on more complex needs such as social relationships, esteem, and self-actualisation. For example, someone who is hungry or lacks a safe place to live will find it difficult to focus on building meaningful social relationships or pursuing personal and professional goals. The fulfilment of basic needs is therefore an essential prerequisite that enables individuals to develop physically, mentally, and emotionally, and reach their full potential.

Through "A Theory of Human Motivation", Maslow brings one of the ideas that is useful to trigger motivation in a person. That to achieve the target above, small steps are needed so as not to burden the mind with only one target. For Generation Alpha, Dian Nusantara University UNDIRA students who are struggling to complete assignments and also pursue project and work targets. It is hoped that Maslow's ideas can help and remind them that it is ok to take small steps one at a time, and prioritising things one by one with effort is the key to achieving bigger targets.
