Redefining Technology in Business: Understanding the Potential of Technopreneurs in Industry 5.0

18 September 2025

The advancement of civilization serves as tangible evidence of the heartbeat of human evolution—not only in terms of adaptation but also in innovation aimed at enhancing creativity and improving quality of life. Today, one of the most crucial pillars of civilization is education, which brings forth comprehensive and far-reaching impacts.

The trade and MSME sectors have likewise advanced through the downstreaming of education across different groups in society. This has enabled greater equality in fostering creativity and innovation based on the knowledge acquired. As we know, entrepreneurship—through the accumulation and production of goods—has become one of the largest driving forces of Indonesia’s economy.

Referring to this statement, data from the Ministry of Cooperatives and MSMEs shows that more than 60% of Indonesia’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is contributed by MSMEs, with an additional role in absorbing approximately 97% of the workforce.

Dear UNDIRA colleagues, Indonesia has now undergone a major transformation, particularly in the sectors of trade and business development. Human civilization has entered a new chapter—namely the era of society and Industry 5.0—where technology, algorithms, device automation, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) play pivotal roles in advancing various sectors, particularly the economy. These advancements provide comprehensive convenience, which has become one of the top priorities of modern society.

In order to capitalize on such convenience and interconnectivity, knowledge must be translated into the implementation of technology in business through diverse platforms offering different functions and services. From this principle emerges the concept of the technopreneur.

A technopreneur, fundamentally, is a combination of “technology” and “entrepreneur.” Technopreneurs create, market, and develop products by leveraging technology as an innovative solution that drives their business ventures.

The presence of the Internet of Things (IoT), which enables seamless interconnection across time and space, has further facilitated interaction and commercial transactions between producers and consumers. The innovations and services provided are increasingly driven by algorithms and AI. The more aligned a product or service is with market segments and individual preferences, the higher the likelihood it will reach and resonate with society.

However, despite the extensive integration of technology into business development, skepticism remains among the public regarding efficiency and speed. Questions surrounding technopreneurship persist—from how quickly profits can be achieved to what strategies are most effective in attracting customers.

At this stage, higher education institutions play a crucial role in advancing societal welfare and sustainability by implementing knowledge that is relevant to social needs, including through Community Engagement (Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat/PkM). This commitment aligns with the implementation of the Tri Dharma of Higher Education and the spirit of DIKTISAINTEK Berdampak, which integrates education, research, and community service as the main pillars for creating a positive impact on society.

Acknowledging the urgent need for awareness of automation in the digital era of business, the Student Affairs Bureau of Universitas Dian Nusantara (UNDIRA), in collaboration with Ayokreasi, will host a seminar titled “TechPreneurship 5.0: Becoming an Entrepreneur in the Era of AI and Automation” on September 27, 2025.

The seminar will also feature the presence of Ms. Irene Umar, Deputy Minister of Creative Economy of Indonesia, along with several prominent CEOs and economic analysts, to broaden perspectives on the opportunities of technopreneurship in the era of Industry 5.0. This seminar reflects UNDIRA’s commitment as a trusted university in preparing students with knowledge and technology to thrive in Industry 5.0 by the year 2030.
