Financial Management Insight Literacy Education: UNDIRA Community Service

Economic actors have a significant impact on the contribution of Indonesia's economic sector. The majority of Indonesia's economic income comes from medium and small industries or better known as MSMEs (Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises). MSMEs are an alternative choice for the life struggles of the majority of women who experienced layoffs as a result of the prolonged pandemic some time ago.

However, since the economic changes caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been an increase in intense competition in Indonesia's business sector. Therefore, the role of universities as knowledge providers is a responsibility for students to share the knowledge they have gained in education.

On 3 March 2024, a Financial Literacy Education activity for Business Actors was carried out by lecturers from the Management Study Program, Faculty of Business and Social Sciences, Dian Nusantara University, Ryani Dhyan Parashakti, SE, MM, Dwi Aprillita, S.ST, MM, Dr. Didin Hikmah Perkasa, SE, MM at Jalan Warakas VIII Gang 10, North Jakarta. This activity is part of the Community Service Programme organised by Dian Nusantara University (UNDIRA) in collaboration with two other universities namely Krida Wacana Christian University (UKRIDA) & Sekolah Tinggi Theologia Injili Jakarta (STTIJA).

This activity is specifically designed for housewives who have been laid off after the COVID-19 pandemic. The purpose of the activity is to provide financial literacy education so that housewives are able to manage the family economy and socialise scientific concepts in the Economics Study Program, in line with the implementation of one of the Tridharma of Higher Education programs.

This activity programme was held at one of the local residents' houses RT 005 RW 10 and was attended by 20 participants. The event presented a speaker who also acted as a resource person and technical implementer at the activity location. During the event, the participants received a briefing on strategies in managing business finances to optimise the family's financial turnover.

The educational material also covered the topic of managing borrowed capital and how to utilise it for profit. This is important given the number of cases of borrowed capital in Indonesia that do not reach a payback point, potentially resulting in debt. With the briefing from this event, it is hoped that the participants will be able to increase the effectiveness of maximising the use of borrowed funds.

This programme specifically highlights the importance of separating business finances from personal finances. This step is designed to better organise the family's financial management, thereby preventing unmonitored or irregular expenditure allocations.

One of the participants in the education programme, who is the wife of the local neighbourhood chief, shared her thoughts on the event: "This programme is very useful for me as a housewife who runs a small business. Knowledge about financial management is a crucial aspect. Now, I am more knowledgeable and confident in managing the financial results of my business venture."

The Head of RT 005/RW 010 also expressed his appreciation for the community service initiative. He considered that the activity was very useful and had provided valuable insights to local residents, especially housewives.

Community Service activities organised by UNDIRA, UKRIDA, and STTIJA aim to increase community understanding of financial and business management. This initiative is expected to open new business opportunities and help maintain the residents' MSMEs (Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises) so that their family economy runs in a better direction.
