The Unwritten Rule in College: Courtesy as the Key to Collaboration and Networking
Dear UNDIRA friends, The new semester is just around the corner, bringing a renewed sense of enthusiasm for all students. University life is, at its core, not only a place to pursue knowledge in depth but also a space to meet individuals from diverse backgrounds, cultures, and even different generations.
Beyond the common perception that university is solely a place for academic learning, in reality, it offers far richer experiences. It encourages us to socialize, engage with others, and view life from different perspectives.
However, dear UNDIRA friends, not every moment in our academic journey will flow smoothly. Challenges and obstacles are inevitable, and at times, these difficulties may lead us to become arrogant, overly emotional, or careless in our interactions—seeing ourselves as always right.
In truth, just like pouring oil on an open flame, facing problems with ego and emotion will only intensify the situation.
If you have ever heard the saying “Win by not fighting” by Sun Tzu, which teaches us to resolve issues without violence or anger, you will find that courtesy works in a similar way. Courtesy shows us how to achieve victory gracefully, without sacrificing our integrity.
Upon reflection, many of the problems we encounter could be resolved more effectively by maintaining composure and practicing courtesy. Remember, dear UNDIRA friends: how we communicate and behave is key!
Self-control, humility, and openness—without compromising self-respect—are essential parts of courtesy that can ease tension and pave the way toward wiser solutions. Even though etiquette is not always written in formal rules, by treating others with respect, we help create a harmonious environment.
In Javanese culture, there is the term Unggah-Ungguh, which refers to proper manners and mutual respect in speech and behavior—values that are considered vital in building good relationships, whether with peers or with those older than us.
Courtesy is not merely a social norm; it is a valuable asset that fosters healthy academic relationships, builds mutual trust, and creates a conducive learning atmosphere. Treat other people as you would treat yourself.
Applying courtesy can be as simple as speaking respectfully, using language appropriate to the time and setting, and being mindful of positive expressions—such as body language and eye contact. Actions speak louder than words, dear UNDIRA friends.
In our academic journey, we are not static figures who merely memorize and complete assignments; we walk alongside many others, and through understanding, collaboration, and openness—rooted in courtesy—we grow into individuals with refined character.
