Struggling to communicate?, Just Keep It Simple!: The Power of Baby Language in Communication

Although delivering information may seem simple, people often find themselves struggling when speaking in public—whether due to overthinking or because the message they wish to convey doesn't align with the audience’s expectations. This mismatch can cause individuals to mentally withdraw or disengage from the conversation altogether.
Moreover, the rise of AI—ranging from web recommendations to audiovisual platforms like YouTube—as well as social media offering an endless stream of products, content, and infographics, can cause distractions that disrupt communication patterns. This phenomenon can be linked to what is known as information flood, where unfiltered absorption of information overwhelms the core ideas one wishes to express. Over time, this can impair both memory retention and communication clarity. A related outcome, often referred to as brain fog, is a byproduct of this overload that leads to a loss of focus.
Fundamentally, communication serves a social purpose: to nurture relationships and affirm the ideas being conveyed. In the context of interpersonal communication, it plays a key role in daily life to express thoughts and maintain listener engagement—especially when negotiating or reaching consensus. In these cases, simplicity becomes vital.
For this reason, the use of baby language has emerged as an effective tool for helping individuals present their ideas. It’s important to clarify that in this context, baby language does NOT imply infantilization or condescension. Rather, it refers to a style of communication that uses simple, direct, and easy-to-understand language—accessible to people from various backgrounds.
Simplicity in communication through baby language does not mean eliminating essential details; rather, it helps align those details with the audience’s capacity and readiness to understand. Much like the Layman’s Terms principle—focused on simplifying complex ideas—baby language offers a grounded, relatable approach to effective and clear communication.
Here are several key advantages of using baby language when communicating or presenting arguments:
-
Prevents redundancy. Simplified communication helps avoid unnecessary repetition and keeps your message concise.
-
Improves listener retention. According to a seminal paper by Miller (1956), people are more likely to remember information that is presented in a simple, structured way—in short, "just get to the point." The same applies to settings like thesis defenses or general presentations. Miller’s principle underscores that simplification reflects a mastery of the material. In turn, clear, assertive, engaging, and straightforward delivery tends to stay longer in human memory.
-
Saves time. Most audiences don’t appreciate being overwhelmed with unwanted details. Instead, they often prefer time-efficient explanations that allow them to return to their priorities.
-
Builds emotional connection. A simpler and more relatable communication style can reduce the perception of social hierarchy, especially when addressing different generations. This further proves how baby language can be an effective tool for creating engaging social media posts.
The use of baby language is also particularly valuable for university students preparing final assignments, proposal presentations, or thesis defenses. The more straightforward your presentation, the smoother the discussion will run—and the more prepared and confident you will appear in delivering your ideas.
At Universitas Dian Nusantara (UNDIRA)—an institution built on the values of Visionary Thinking, Integrity, and Professionalism—effective communication is a reflection of your professionalism. This aligns with UNDIRA’s curriculum, which is designed to cultivate graduates who are not only academically excellent but also professionally capable.
Simplicity, ultimately, is a mark of deep understanding, confidence, and subject mastery. Philosopher Albert Einstein once said: "If you can’t explain it simply, you don’t understand it well enough." A person who truly understands and believes in their capabilities will be able to explain things in a way that anyone can grasp—without compromising the essence of the “main course” they intend to serve.
