Closing Intergenerational Gaps of Digital Literacy Awareness: FTI UNDIRA Utilized YouTube as an Interactive Learning Platform

Digital technology has brought about significant changes across various aspects of life, including education. This transformation has not only expanded access to information but also revolutionized the way educational materials are delivered—through e-books, educational videos, and interactive documentaries.
The availability of digital devices In the era of the Internet of Things (IoT) and various online platforms allows anyone to access information quickly, easily, and flexibly. This accessibility is a key strength in creating more open and inclusive learning environments.
Unfortunately, not all groups can enjoy the benefits of technological advancement equally. The elderly often face challenges due to the generational gap—a difference in perspectives, skills, and technological understanding between generations.
Elderly individuals generally struggle with understanding digital formats and adapting to modern learning media. Physical limitations such as presbyopia and memory decline, along with psychological barriers like loneliness and lack of social interaction, further widen this digital divide.
To address these challenges, the Faculty of Engineering and Informatics at Universitas Dian Nusantara (FTI UNDIRA) initiated a research and community service program (PkM) titled “Digital Education for the Elderly: Using YouTube as a Platform for Entertainment and Learning.”
YouTube was selected as a learning medium due to its ability to present information in an engaging and easy-to-understand audiovisual format. Video content captures attention, builds emotional connection, and enhances message clarity. Strong visual elements reinforce memory retention, while dynamic audio helps improve focus and comprehension.
The program adopts a personalized and hands-on approach tailored to each participant’s capabilities. Learning materials are delivered gradually and in a friendly manner, allowing the elderly to learn comfortably at their own pace.
In response to uneven internet connectivity, participants were also encouraged to download educational videos in advance so they could watch them together without signal interruptions. This strategy ensures that the learning process remains effective despite limited access.
The results of this community service activity showed that 75% of participants experienced significant improvement in their digital understanding and engagement after the training. This demonstrates that, with the right strategy, platforms like YouTube can serve as effective, adaptable, and enjoyable educational tools for older adults.
Through this creative way to solve a problem for the elderly, and minimizing the technological gap - FTI UNDIRA not only demonstrates the active role of academia in addressing social challenges but also makes a tangible contribution to bridging the digital divide across generations. This initiative serves as a concrete step toward ensuring that the elderly continue to have access to relevant, meaningful, and dignified learning spaces amid the wave of national digital transformation.
