Prospective students must know this term in the world of lectures

Entering the world of college is a big step for students who have just finished high school. The world of lectures has different dynamics from school, both in terms of the learning system, the environment, and the terms used. To make it easier for prospective students to adapt, here are some adjustments that must be made and important terms that need to be known.

1. Rector

The head leader of an entirety of a campus.

2. Faculty

A faculty is a unit within a university that oversees several study programmes or departments that are related in one similar field of science. The faculty is usually led by a dean and has its own organisational structure that includes study programmes, and various academic support units. Examples of Faculties at Dian Nusantara University: Faculty of Business and Social Sciences and Faculty of Engineering and Informatics. 

3. Study Programme

A Study Programme is a part of a Faculty that provides a specific curriculum and offers degrees in a particular field. Study programmes often referred to as departments have a distinct focus of study AND are usually led by a Head of Study Programme (Kaprodi). Examples of Study Programmes at Dian Nusantara University: Management Study Programme, Accounting Study Programme, Communication Science Study Programme, English Literature Study Programme in the Faculty of Business and Social Sciences as well as Informatics Engineering Study Programme, Mechanical Engineering Study Programme, Electrical Engineering Study Programme and Civil Engineering Study Programme in the Faculty of Engineering and Informatics.

4. NIM

NIM stands for Student Identification Number, which is used as attendance during lectures.

5. KTM

KTM stands for Student Identity Card which functions as an official identification given to every student registered at a university. KTM has several important functions, both in academic and non-academic contexts such as being able to be used as access to campus facilities to a Non-Cash Payment tool. 

6. KRS

KRS stands for Study Plan Card, an important document used by students to plan and record courses to be taken during one semester. KRS contains information about lecture schedules, lecturer names, and the number of credits taken. KRS is usually completed and approved at the beginning of each semester as part of the academic registration process.

7. SKS

SKS stands for Semester Credit Unit, a unit used to measure students' study load in a course for one semester. SKS not only includes the duration of face-to-face meetings in class, but also the time needed for assignments, independent study, and other academic activities related to the course. Usually, each course has a different SKS weight such as 3 SKS or 2 SKS.

8. UTS

UTS stands for Mid-Semester Exam: An exam held in the middle of the semester to test students' understanding of the material that has been taught since the beginning of the semester.

9. UAS

UAS stands for End of Semester Exam: An exam held at the end of the semester to test students' understanding of all the material that has been learnt during the semester.

10. KHS

KHS stands for Study Result Card which contains a student's academic record for one or more semesters. KHS records all courses that have been taken by students along with the grades obtained and the number of semester credit units (SKS) successfully completed. In addition, KHS also lists the Grade Point Average (IP), which is the average of all grades obtained in the semester.

11. IPS

IPS stands for Semester Achievement Index which measures the academic achievement of students during one semester IPS is calculated based on the number of credit scores obtained from each course taken during the semester, taking into account the weight of the value of each course. IPS is used to evaluate students' academic progress and determine whether they are eligible to continue their studies. 

12. GPA

GPA stands for Cumulative Grade Point Average which measures a student's academic performance throughout the study period. It is an overall average score that reflects a student's academic achievement throughout his/her study period at university. GPA is calculated by combining the grades of all courses that have been taken during the entire study period, then divided by the total number of Semester Credit Units (SKS) that have been completed. GPA is used to provide an overall picture of a student's academic performance during their higher education and is often a determinant in various matters, such as graduation, scholarship acceptance, and overall academic evaluation.

13. MKW

MKW stands for Compulsory Courses that must be taken and completed by students as part of the basic curriculum of the chosen study programme or major. For example: students with a Communication Science study programme are required to take Communication Theory or Communication Psychology courses, if students with an Informatics Engineering Study Programme are required to take Data Structures and Algorithms or Advanced Programming courses.

14. MKP

MKP stands for Specialisation Courses, which are courses taken by students based on their respective study programmes. For example, students in the English Literature Study Programme who choose the Applied Linguistics concentration will study the application of linguistic theory in practical contexts such as language learning and text analysis. 

15. MKU

General Subjects stands for courses that are intended to develop aspects of student personality as individuals and society. Or usually at Dian Nusantara University it is called MKCU or University Characteristic Courses. Example: Civic Education, Pancasila Education, Religious Education, Indonesian Language and English. Usually found in the first semester of lectures.

16. Academic Supervisor 

Academic Advisors are lecturers who are responsible for providing academic guidance to students during their studies in higher education, such as assisting students in determining which courses to take in accordance with the study programme curriculum, monitoring and evaluating students' academic progress, including grade achievement, participation in academic activities, and involvement in research or projects, to solving academic problems.

17. Final Project Supervisor 

Final Project Supervisors are lecturers who have a special role in guiding students in completing their Final Project, such as a thesis. Assist students in determining the topic of the Final Project that is relevant and appropriate to their field of study in designing the appropriate research methodology to answer the research questions or achieve the objectives of the Final Project project. Guide students in preparing for the Final Project hearing, including assisting in organising presentations, answering questions, and preparing hearing materials. Of course, a final project supervisor needs to make time for regular consultations with students to discuss the progress of the final project and overcome any obstacles that may arise.

18. INTERNSHIP

Internships in higher education are programs that allow students to gain practical work experience in their field of study through placements in related companies, organisations or institutions. Internship programs are usually part of the academic curriculum and are designed to give students the opportunity to apply the theoretical knowledge they have learned in the classroom to real-world situations. Usually the duration needed to carry out an internship is 3 months, and at the end students will be asked to make an internship report and conduct an internship hearing as a form of formal report to the internship supervisor.

19. KKN

KKN stands for Kuliah Kerja Nyata, which is an academic programme that is part of the curriculum in many universities in Indonesia, where students are required to go directly to the community to carry out activities that are devotional and empowering, making a real contribution to the community through various useful programmes and activities. KKN usually lasts for one to three months, depending on the programme set by the university.

20. PROPOSAL SEMINAR

Proposal Seminar or what can be called SEMPRO is an academic evaluation process carried out by students in higher education as part of the stages of preparing a thesis or final project. In the SEMPRO session, students present their research proposal in front of supervisors and examiners to get input, criticism, and approval before proceeding to the research or thesis writing stage. 

21. FINAL TASK

The Final Project in higher education is a scientific work or academic project that must be completed by students as a condition for obtaining a bachelor's degree or other academic degree. It is usually the final stage in a programme of study and entails independent research, project development, or the creation of a specific piece of work that reflects a student's mastery of the material and abilities in their field of study. 

22. GRADUATION

Graduation in higher education is an official ceremony to award academic degrees to students who have successfully completed all educational and academic requirements set by the college. 

Understanding these terms will help prospective students to be better prepared for the world of lectures and understand the educational process they will undergo in college.
