Returning to Heaven, Yet Still Guiding our Hearts: Renewing Our Perspective on the Ascension of Jesus Christ

Christians around the world are preparing to commemorate one of the most significant moments in the liturgical calendar — the Ascension of Jesus Christ. This holy day is observed every Thursday, exactly 40 days after Easter Sunday. It marks the event when Jesus Christ ascended into heaven in the presence of His disciples, as recorded in the Scriptures. The Ascension not only signifies the conclusion of Jesus’ physical presence on earth but also the beginning of a new chapter in the journey of Christian faith.
Behind this physical departure lies a profound promise and hope conveyed by Jesus: the presence of the Holy Spirit would continue to guide and empower believers to carry on His divine mission. As written in Mark 16:19–20:
"After the Lord Jesus had spoken to them, He was taken up into heaven and He sat at the right hand of God. Then the disciples went out and preached everywhere, and the Lord worked with them and confirmed His word by the signs that accompanied it."
Through this passage, we understand that the Ascension of Christ does not mark the end of His earthly work, but rather serves as a calling for the disciples — and now all believers — to actively continue His teachings with love, justice, and humility.
In today’s fast-paced and competitive world, including within academic settings, the meaning of Christ’s Ascension remains highly relevant. Young people, especially students and lecturers, face numerous social pressures — from achievement expectations and identity crises to the overwhelming influence of social media that often blurs the true meaning of life and spiritual pursuit.
The event of Christ’s Ascension invites us to realign our life’s orientation. Jesus came from a humble background, yet through consistent and compassionate service, He transformed countless lives. He did not seek worldly validation but lived to be a blessing to others — even to the point of sacrifice on the cross.
These values resonate with the ideals of academic life, which should not merely pursue accomplishments, but also be rooted in integrity, empathy, and meaningful contributions to society.
The Ascension of Jesus Christ invites all of us — as individuals and as members of the academic community — to reflect on our roles in continuing Christ’s spirit in our daily lives. Whether through teaching, research, community service, or social interaction, we are called to be bearers of light and hope, just as Christ exemplified.
Being a light in the campus environment does not require grand gestures. Sometimes, being a supportive friend, maintaining honesty in learning, or being fair in discussions already reflects the noble Christian values we are called to uphold.
This sacred moment reminds us that life is not merely about personal achievement, but about how we, as scholars and believers, partake in God’s greater work of love for the world.
In living this life, we must continue to hold firmly to the faith taught by our Creator. Life’s journey is not dictated or observed by others, but rather by ourselves — in relationship with God, who constantly watches over us and blesses us abundantly.
The Ascension of Jesus Christ serves as a spiritual milestone to renew our commitment to a meaningful and impactful life, in line with His teachings and life example. His ascension into heaven does not mean He has become distant, but rather that He is now closer — within our hearts and in the calling of our lives.
