Students Must Know! Small Habits That Can Make You Look Unprofessional

22 Mei 2025

Students are often seen as creative, innovative, and agents of change. However, college life is not only about studying and completing assignments — it’s also a training ground for entering the professional world. Unfortunately, many students unknowingly behave unprofessionally due to small, seemingly insignificant habits. These habits can significantly impact how you are perceived by lecturers, peers, and even potential employers.

Here are several minor habits to avoid:

1. Oversharing Personal Information

Not everything needs to be shared, especially in a professional environment. Sharing overly personal stories can make others uncomfortable or even become gossip material.
In the workplace, it’s crucial to understand who, where, and when to speak. The topic being discussed also matters. Not all personal information is appropriate to share — and in some cases, it may not even be safe, especially in a professional context.

2. Slow Response to Messages

Today, responsiveness is often seen as a measure of work ethic. Late replies may be perceived as indifference or lack of discipline.
Moreover, delayed responses can reflect poor time management, which may negatively affect how your superiors view your performance. Some jobs even require prompt communication to maintain strong customer relationships.
Make it a habit to respond to important messages quickly, especially those from lecturers, supervisors, or colleagues. Use reminder apps or to-do lists to avoid forgetting.

3. Messy Work Environment

A dirty desk or malfunctioning equipment can hinder your productivity. It can also signal that you're unprepared and irresponsible.
Maintain a clean and organized workspace, take care of your tools (such as laptops or cameras), and perform regular checks to ensure everything is in good condition.

4. Poor Digital Communication Etiquette

Sending brief messages like “Sir, permission” without a proper greeting or explanation can be considered rude. Similarly, using overly casual language in formal settings can damage your professional image.
Always use polite, clear, and context-appropriate language. Read the situation carefully before speaking or sending messages.

This also applies to the timing and tone of language used. Cracking jokes or using slang in the middle of a formal discussion can come off as disrespectful to the situation and audience. Even if you're trying to seem approachable or relaxed, always read the room. Use appropriate language to remain respectful and professional.

5. Showing Up Late Without Notice

Arriving late to class or meetings without informing others shows a lack of respect for their time.
If you’re running late, let someone know. This demonstrates responsibility and shows that you value other people’s time as much as your own.

6. Always Saying Yes to Everything (Being a Yes-Man)

Commitment is a core value in any work environment. Always saying “yes” but failing to follow through can make you appear unreliable.
Understand the task before accepting it. Only agree if you are confident that you can complete it on time and with quality.

Being professional doesn’t mean being rigid. In fact, small things like politeness, effective communication, and accountability reflect maturity. These are the values upheld by Dian Nusantara University (UNDIRA) — Professionalism and Integrity.

Ultimately, small habits shape who we are and influence our future. Therefore, developing yourself to become a responsible and ethical individual is essential.
Remember, the workplace is not just a place to earn money — it becomes your second home. You are not only evaluated by your technical skills, but also by your character. To be a true professional, you must also be a person of integrity and good character.
