Exploring the World through Language Skills

Language serves as a fundamental tool for communication between individuals. Language also serves to characterize a region or country. One interesting aspect of language is bilingualism, the ability to speak two languages fluently. Bilingualism is more than just proficiency in grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation. It encompasses the ability to express oneself effectively and understand diverse cultural contexts.
In today's global environment, it is increasingly important to have skills in multiple languages, including one's native language and other international languages such as English. English is not only an international language, but also plays an important role in global communication in the field of digital technology, such as software development on international networks. In this digital age, English proficiency is becoming increasingly important due to its widespread use on the internet for work-related tasks, educational purposes, and social interactions.
Mastering English is no longer just practical but also strategic. English proficiency can open doors to higher education opportunities abroad and broaden career prospects by enabling participation in global discussions and enterprises.
UNDIRA's English Literature Program recognizes the importance of this field and is dedicated to providing high quality education through effective teaching and learning processes. Our facilities are equipped to support these activities, and we aim to develop students' skills through various initiatives that meet industry and entrepreneurial needs in the fields of English linguistics, translation, and teaching, as well as Applied Literature.
Our goal is to produce graduates who are intelligent, ethical, competent, highly competitive, and able to advance science and technology in the fields of linguistics, translation, and English language teaching at the national and international levels. To achieve these goals, the English Literature Study Program offers several concentrations designed to adequately prepare students to excel globally, including:
1. Translation
Translation proficiency is a valuable skill that requires mastery in two languages, such as English as the Source Language (SL) and Indonesian as the Target Language (TL). There are three main methods used in translation: word-for-word translation, literal translation, and free translation. The main goal of this training is for students to be able to translate well from English to Indonesian, thus improving their ability to communicate internationally in various sectors, such as business and education.
2. English Language Learning
In the English Literature study program, there are five main skills that are the focus of teaching: listening, speaking, reading, writing, and grammar. These skills are fundamental aspects of mastering the English language. Achieving mastery in all these areas requires dedication and commitment, as the process is neither easy nor quick.
The learning process in English at our institution emphasizes not only theory, but also practice. This is to ensure that students can use English fluently in real-life situations.
3. Applied Literature
Applied Literature refers to the practical application of literary skills and knowledge outside of academia. Students will engage in a comprehensive study that includes literary theory, text analysis, writing proficiency, and the utilization of literary understanding in various professions and industries. Career prospects in Applied Literature are diverse and constantly evolving with market demands and technological advances, often requiring flexibility and adaptability to industry trends and technological changes.
The Applied Literature, English Language Teaching and Translation concentrations within the English Literature program offer distinct advantages. Students will develop strong oral and written communication skills through text analysis, creative writing, and English language teaching - assets that are invaluable across a wide range of careers and industries. In addition, literary theory courses enhance students' ability to carefully analyze and interpret texts in a variety of professional contexts.
Focusing on English language teaching prepares individuals to be effective educators by deepening their understanding of diverse teaching methods, learning theories, evaluation techniques, and classroom management skills.
In addition, studies in literature and translation provide a deep insight into the cultural, historical and social contexts from which literary works originate; this is essential for appreciating global diversity. Translation studies also allow students to develop multilingual skills. By engaging in this focused area of study,
Students can increase their adaptability to change and position themselves as innovators in a rapidly evolving career field.
The English Literature Study Program at UNDIRA is committed to equipping students with basic English language skills that include listening, speaking, reading, writing, and grammar. These essential skills support academic learning in literary and cultural studies. In this domain, students engage in appreciating literary works and conducting critical and analytical examinations through class discussions and the writing of scholarly papers. To further prepare themselves for scholarly research and writing, students also study the disciplines of philosophy and logic.
Therefore, studying with the English Literature study program at Dian Nusantara University is the right choice with a focus on understanding translation, English language learning, and applied literature.
