Preparing for International Opportunities: Tips to Sharpen Your Language Skills

10 April 2025

Globalization is a process that enhances the interconnectedness and interdependence between people and nations across the globe. Globalization also provides incentives and offers various conveniences, including opportunities for studying abroad and employment prospects for job seekers who wish to explore better career opportunities abroad.

By understanding the impacts and opportunities brought by globalization, the willingness to network with people from various nations becomes a primary goal, especially for students. However, the process of networking with Foreign Nationals (FN) certainly requires competent language skills.

Language is one of the most valuable assets. Beyond broadening one's cultural horizons, it also facilitates communication for students aspiring to work overseas or with foreign companies within their own country.

The majority of jobs demand proficiency in multiple languages. In certain workplaces, employees are even required to have native-level language skills due to the presence of expatriate visitors from specific countries.

Mastering language skills can also lead to certification of one's language competence. Additionally, companies generally require language certifications such as IELTS, TOEFL, TOEIC, and JLPT to ensure that their employees can communicate effectively in formal work environments.

For example, most companies in Japan mandate non-Japanese job applicants to possess a minimum JLPT N3 certification as a prerequisite for employment. Another example is the requirement of TOEFL and IELTS tests for job applicants, which is also a mandatory graduation requirement for students.

Thus, students' language proficiency is now one of the keys to success. Students can access a variety of resources, such as:

  1. Duolingo: Duolingo is an application that enables users to learn languages by answering and matching phrases provided. Duolingo not only offers flexibility in terms of time and location for learning but also ensures a fun and interactive experience. Through its gamification approach, which rewards users, students are motivated to continually hone their language skills.

  1. Watching Films: Various platforms like Netflix, Crunchyroll, Amazon Prime, and Disney+ provide access to films tailored to individual language preferences. Learning a language by watching and listening to films not only offers a conducive learning experience but also facilitates discussions about the film's storyline with fellow enthusiasts.

  2. Enjoying Streaming Content: One favorite method among the younger generation during leisure time is watching streaming content. Watching favorite content in a foreign language can boost motivation and enthusiasm for learning. Moreover, with the use of natural language styles and slang presented by streamers, students can pick up intonation techniques and phrases that are often unavailable in films or dictionaries.

  1. Music: Not only does Music provide an enjoyable experience for listeners but also serves as a fun and engaging way to learn languages. The right music helps users memorize lyrics, and through these lyrics, listeners can explore their meanings to enrich their vocabulary.

Through the English Literature Study Program at Universitas Dian Nusantara (UNDIRA), students can thoroughly develop their knowledge of English language skills, culture, and proper grammar.

Furthermore, UNDIRA also offers the UNDIRA English Centre (UEC), which supports language development through various programs, such as UNDIRA Speaks English (USE), Academic English, the General English Test (GET), along with TOEIC Preparation Classes and TOEIC Tests.

Language will remain an individual's most valuable asset, especially in this era of globalization and cultural integration, enabling you to explore the identities of various nations while enhancing your opportunities to work with foreign companies.
