The Impact of Modernity: Challenges and Tips for Generation Z and Generation Alpha

In reality, every generation evolves in a different era and faces unique challenges. Generation Z and Generation Alpha, as true digital natives, are constantly navigating a world that changes rapidly, impacting their work and personal lives. They spend significant time on social media, online shopping, and other digital activities.
The challenges faced by these generations span economic, social, and psychological aspects. Conflicts of opinion with older generations are a primary source of issues, as Generation Z and Generation Alpha grow up with distinct values and norms, embracing social change, individual rights, and freedom of expression. These differences are often perceived as "eccentric" or "nonconformist" by older generations with more classical or traditional mindsets. Such challenges frequently give rise to varied opinions about these generations.
- Overthinking: One of the main issues faced by Generation Z and Generation Alpha is overthinking, often caused by excessive consumption of social media content, low self-esteem, an overly future-oriented mindset, and social pressure to succeed.
- Work-Life Balance: Work is a top priority for both generations. However, the pressure to maintain a balance between work and personal life often backfires, especially when managing personal space, leading to burnout and diminished family interaction.
- Social Expectations: Excessive judgment or criticism—either self-imposed or from others—can create various problems. Additionally, unrealistic self-standards, commonly upheld by Generation Z teens, often ignite debates on social media, resulting in anxiety.
According to the Social Exchange Theory developed by John Thibaut and Harold Kelley (1959), sociologist George Homans (1961), Richard Emerson (1962), and Peter Blau (1964), social relationships are based on the exchange of messages between individuals, whether in the form of objects or words.
Furthermore, social demands driven by the entertainment industry and absorbed by Generation Z can create unrealistic expectations, particularly regarding appearance and material wealth. This often leads to social unrest and triggers depression and anxiety, especially among Generation Z teenagers.
Sedentary Lifestyle and Irregular Eating Patterns
With increasing economic and work demands, both generations tend to neglect their physical health by adopting irregular eating habits and engaging in minimal physical activity. This can lead to long-term health issues.
Solutions for Modern Life Challenges
To address the various challenges arising from modern life, Generation Z and Generation Alpha can adopt the following strategies:
-
Digital Detox: Reducing the use of technology and social media effectively prevents addiction and stress caused by trends that can trigger anxiety and Fear of Missing Out (FOMO).
-
Time and Space Management: Properly managing time helps achieve better work-life balance. Interacting with close family and friends provides natural emotional support.
-
Mindfulness: Practicing mindfulness can help alleviate anxiety about the future, regrets about the past, and feelings of inferiority due to social stratification.
-
Exercise and Healthy Eating: Engaging in light exercise and maintaining a healthy diet can reduce the risk of diseases caused by a sedentary lifestyle. Regular stretching during work hours can also prevent joint stiffness due to lack of movement.
Reducing dependency on technology, effective time management, and practicing mindfulness are significant steps toward creating a more balanced and meaningful life.
