Exploring the Foundations of Accreditation: The Role of BAN-PT and the Significance of Professors in Academics

Accreditation is a process conducted for study programs or higher education institutions by the National Accreditation Board for Higher Education (BAN-PT), an organization operating under the mandate of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (KEMENDIKBUDRISTEK). According to the Minister of Research, Technology, and Higher Education Regulation No. 32 of 2016 on Study Program and Higher Education Accreditation, BAN-PT is tasked with autonomously and objectively developing higher education accreditation.
BAN-PT plays a pivotal role in supporting the assessment of the quality of higher education institutions in compliance with foundational educational legislation, such as Law No. 20 of 2003, Government Regulation No. 60 of 1999, and the Minister of National Education Decree No. 118/U/2003. This enables universities to receive evaluations based on the standards outlined in the National Higher Education Standards or the Higher Education Accreditation Instrument (IAPT).
Under the existing educational framework, BAN-PT is responsible for evaluating all aspects of higher education institutions across Indonesia, both public and private. These evaluations cover educational support facilities, such as the availability of practical laboratories, as well as achievements by faculty members and students.
To implement its activities, BAN-PT conducts Field Assessments for Higher Education Accreditation (AL APT) at institutions applying for accreditation. This process usually involves several BAN-PT assessors from various universities across Indonesia, including Professors.
The title of Professor represents the pinnacle of an academic career, signifying dedication, competence, and exceptional contributions to knowledge and society. This title is not only prestigious but also carries significant responsibility to continually contribute to higher education, as regulated by KEMENDIKBUDRISTEK.
Through various reviews, publications in national and international scientific journals, state-recognized certifications, and extensive experience in education, a Professor possesses high credibility in contributing to the academic world, both as an educator and as an accreditation assessor. However, not all Professors are automatically qualified to become BAN-PT accreditation assessors. To serve as an assessor, one must undergo a specific selection process based on criteria established by BAN-PT.
Aligned with this, Universitas Dian Nusantara (UNDIRA) recently held a Field Assessment for Higher Education Accreditation (AL APT) from December 1 to 3, 2024. During the assessment, three BAN-PT assessors conducted evaluations on the UNDIRA campus: Prof. Dr.-Ing. Ir. I Made Londen Batan, M.Eng. – Professor at Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology, Prof. Dr. Indra Maipita, S.Pd., M.Si., Ph.D. – Professor at Medan State University, and Prof. Dr. Ni Luh Nyoman Seri Malini, S.S., M.Hum. – Professor at Udayana University, Bali
These assessors conducted a comprehensive assessment of various indicators of accreditation, including academic quality, institutional governance, infrastructure, student services, and the relevance of study programs to societal and workforce needs.
During the assessment, the assessors engaged directly with various stakeholders at Universitas Dian Nusantara, including university leaders, faculty members, administrative staff, students, and alumni. They also reviewed supporting documents and inspected campus facilities, such as classrooms, laboratories, libraries, and student service centers.
This process is expected to provide a comprehensive overview of the quality of education that UNDIRA has developed and will continue to enhance. The results of this assessment not only serve as a benchmark for UNDIRA’s current achievements but also as motivation to innovate and improve the quality of education, research, and community service.
Universitas Dian Nusantara believes that this evaluation marks an important initial step toward realizing its vision of becoming a globally competitive university. The institution is committed to upholding its values of vision, integrity, and professionalism.
