Spirit of the Islamic (Hijri) New Year: Exploring the Values of Humanity and Brotherhood

08 Juli 2024

In the teachings of Islam there is a calendar category known as the Islamic Calendar, which is a calendar system used by Muslims to determine important dates in Islam. through the arrangement of the calendar in accordance with the provisions of Muslims, the Hijri New Year was born as a symbolism and its deep meaning in showing courage, sacrifice, and the formation of identity and solidarity of Muslims.

The Islamic (Hijri) New Year marks the beginning of the year in the Hijri calendar, the Lunar Calendar used by Muslims around the world. It begins on 1 Muharram the first month of the Islamic calendar, and is reckoned from the Hijra which is Prophet Muhammad's migration from Mecca to Medina in 622 AD.

But besides the role of the Islamic New Year as a Muslim celebration, the Islamic New Year is also a historical record of the concept of humanity and brotherhood. Through the history of the Islamic New Year, it can be seen that the meaning of a new year is fundamentally a change or transformation. Many traditions and religions value the concept of new beginnings and transformation. The Islamic New Year reminds us that everyone has the opportunity to start over and make positive changes in their lives.

Like the concept of turning over a new leaf in general, a new year will be a time for people to reflect on what they have done or what they have achieved in life. The Islamic New Year is no different from the concept of New Year celebrations in general. As such, the Islamic New Year is not only a religious commemoration, but also a universal representation of new beginnings and hope for positive change.

In addition to a sense of reflection on what has been done in life, the Islamic New Year also brings the meaning of togetherness and solidarity that is expected to bring closeness between people. The Hijrah event highlights the importance of solidarity and brotherhood as Prophet Muhammad and his followers were received by the people of Medina with open arms, showing a concrete example of solidarity and assistance regardless of background.

The Hijrah to Medina was a turning point in Islamic history, marking the beginning of the spread of Muslim knowledge and sociality to the neighbouring population. In addition to the development of knowledge, the hijra was also a moment of equalising development for the Medina area, which was positively perceived by the inhabitants.

By highlighting universal values and organising inclusive activities, the Hijri New Year can be a moment that strengthens togetherness and solidarity not only among Muslims but also among different communities and religions, creating a more harmonious and supportive world.
