Exploring Literary Criticism in the Modern Era: UNDIRA Hosts a Literary Studies Webinar

Literary studies serve as a means for individuals to reflect on life through published works. Recognizing the importance of studying literature and its connection to life, the English Literature Program at UNDIRA held a webinar titled “Posthumanism in Language and Literary Studies” on Saturday, November 23, 2024.
The webinar featured two distinguished speakers in the fields of literature and linguistics: Prof. Setiono Sugiharto, a linguistics expert from the Doctoral Program in Applied English Linguistics at Universitas Katolik Jakarta, and Prof. Manneke Budiman, a literature expert from the English Literature Program at Universitas Indonesia.
The event was moderated by Maya Sekartaji, M.Hum., a lecturer in UNDIRA’s English Literature Program and Head of the UNDIRA English Center (UEC).
The webinar began with an opening remark by Vice Rector III, Ir. Margono Sugeng, M.Sc., who emphasized the critical role of literature in fostering a deeper understanding of the world. He expressed hope that this discussion would broaden UNDIRA students' perspectives on the relationship between humanity, technology, and human values through the lens of literature.
In the context of literature, posthumanism challenges traditional notions that place humans at the center of everything. This concept views humanity as part of a larger network involving technology, the environment, and non-human entities.
Prof. Setiono Sugiharto initiated the discussion by critiquing anthropocentrism, the belief that humans are the primary subjects of literary studies. He argued that such a perspective often neglects other elements, such as nature and technology, which can enrich literary analysis. Additionally, he highlighted the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in managing information and creating literary works, suggesting a shift in how authorship is understood.
Following this, Prof. Manneke Budiman delved into the impact of technology on the development of posthumanism. While acknowledging the convenience technology brings, he cautioned against its misuse, which could compromise human values and environmental integrity. He stressed the need for collaboration between humans, nature, and technology to build a better future.
The webinar underscored the importance of engaging critically with literature amidst the rapid advancements in technology. Reading literary works that offer critical insights can help individuals preserve human values while adapting to changing times.
By discussing posthumanism, UNDIRA aims to inspire students to embrace reflection and collaboration in the modern era. This webinar encouraged participants to view the world through the lens of literature, equipping them to navigate future challenges with a deeper understanding and a critical mindset.
