Facing Career Challenges in the Digital Era, UNDIRA Holds a Webinar Discussing Worker Characteristics in Era 5.0

On Saturday, July 27, 2024, Universitas Dian Nusantara (UNDIRA) held its 43rd monthly webinar through the Career Development and Alumni Bureau division. The webinar was themed "Career Revolution: Embracing Opportunities in the Digital Era" and was hosted by two competent speakers: Mrs. Vicky Ludovick Soraya, Corporate HR and Legal Head at Abathi Group, and Eza Hazami, Tech HR Business Partner at a fintech company and a Digital Creator.
Generation Z and Generation Alpha are two generations that continuously adapt to various fields of work simultaneously. This phenomenon arises as a response to changes in the economy and the work ethic culture post-COVID-19 pandemic. The economic downturn has influenced the decision-making of these two generations to engage in more than one type of professional activity. They not only strive to obtain educational certifications but are also actively networking to build connections toward more promising career opportunities.
On the other hand, it is important for job applicants from Generation Z and Generation Alpha to recognize some basic principles in the world of work, one of which is the characterization of applicants. This process is highly useful for HR departments in evaluating the potential of candidates before they are accepted into an organization. Before applying for a specific position, HR tends to research the track record listed on applicants' CVs as a primary consideration.
Of course, there is a saying that "walls have ears," indicating that every activity on social media is still being monitored, even if the attention does not always come directly from the Human Resources Department (HRD). In her experience as an HR professional, Mrs. Vicky Ludovick Soraya shared how one employee at her company frequently requested to work from home. Given the employee's excellent performance record, this was not an issue.
Although the information obtained by HR may be limited, it is not impossible for other companies to communicate about that employee with the organization where they work. Therefore, maintaining employee loyalty to the company is an important aspect that needs to be preserved. Time management skills are crucial to ensure that side jobs do not interfere with their primary commitment.
Additionally, it is also important for individuals in the workplace to understand that they will be interacting with various different generations—including Baby Boomers, Generation Y (Gen Z), Millennials, and Generation X. Discipline in adjusting one’s character and emotions when dealing with differing opinions is a responsibility of every worker. This ability is part of emotional control practice and can help individuals enhance workplace communication.
In the context of interaction with various generations in the workplace, it is essential to realize that a person’s knowledge and skills are not the only factors determining how long they stay with a company. Appearance is also a crucial aspect that should be considered by every individual in building a professional character. This appearance not only includes how one dresses and personal well-being but also involves small details like posture, background during online meetings, and participation in office activities.
The final career advice is for individuals not to be too rigid or calculative. It is important to develop an open mindset toward new discussions to explore the various positions available. Don't just play the role of a team member; it would be more beneficial if you could establish your own brand identity and add value to the organization. Being an individual with an open mind will greatly assist in the professional world because working is not merely about enriching your CV, improving skills, or pursuing financial gains. Work can serve as a means of professional network development—a connection that might prove useful at an unexpected time in the future.
