Emotion Management for Productivity: A Key to Success

26 Juli 2024

Emotions are a part of daily life that can cause various reactions such as stress and anxiety. Through these reactions, a person can experience events such as irregular breathing patterns to heartbeats that cause an increase in blood pressure, both of which automatically cause a decrease in concentration or accuracy.

According to psychologist Sigmund Freud, emotional surges are something that humans cannot consciously control. He even said that consciousness is only a small point in the human being. This is also related to the existence of the ideas of id, ego and super ego which are the drivers of a human action.

The id is what underlies a person's emotional responses. It can also be referred to as the part of the personality that regulates a person's basic needs such as eating, drinking, and sleeping. The Ego is the part that deals with reasoning about a case seen or felt through a logical framework. The Super Ego is the culmination of the two, however, the Super Ego serves as the foundation of morality that a person takes in making decisions through various aspects such as morals and ethnicity.

Emotions are closely related to a person's health condition. In some cases, emotional fluctuations can cause various effects such as a decrease in the immune system, an increase in blood sugar, an increase in cholesterol, and even respiratory problems. In doing daily activities and exercising, these conditions can interfere with productivity and the results you want to achieve. Therefore, emotional control is something that should be mastered by a person so that it can improve focus and health for productivity.

Through one of Adi K.'s books “Being Unhappy Is a Choice”, we learnt that although there is control over the processing of one's emotions, it must be recognised that an emotion is only a projection of what one wants. If one is able to control emotions and desires that arise due to various factors in order to be themselves and live a mentally healthy life, then one is already living a happy life despite adopting the idea that ‘Happiness is a choice’.

Another aspect of emotional fluctuation, lack of self-worth, can also lead to decreased focus. For example, in archery or shooting sports, if there is emotional turbulence, the accuracy of decision making to hit the target will be disrupted by an increase in the rhythm of breathing and heart rate. Although it seems trivial, it is also related to emotional control. Therefore, calming the mind through mindfulness activities, regulating breathing patterns and emptying the mind of negative things or emotions tends to help one's focus.

According to Frederic Skinner who implemented learning with the Grooming method where there is a reward for a certain activity that is expected to produce the expected goal, this is called Operant Conditioning. In addition to the implementation method strategy by Skinner, there is a Coping method aimed at managing stress, challenges, or conflicts that they face in their daily lives.

Coping can involve cognitive strategies, such as changing the way you think about the situation, or direct action, such as seeking help or avoiding stressful situations. These two methods can certainly minimize the fluctuation of one's negative emotions and are expected to create a performance that is conducive to the activities undertaken. The existence of these methods can help manage internal emotions in the presence of external encouragement.

By understanding and accepting that we cannot control everything outside of ourselves, but can control our attitudes and reactions to events, we can achieve inner calm. With emotional control, it is expected that an individual can achieve the target set as a form of success in defeating negative emotions from interalisation that have the potential to become a barrier to an individual.
