Develop Cross-Disciplinary Skills: Preparing Students for the World of Work

25 Juni 2024

The 21st century is an age where technological and cultural developments are the time when the race between generations to achieve the desired results. The development of some skills beyond the basis of one's education is certainly the main target of Generation Z and Generation Alpha as a form of seeking experience and of course social connections. A person pursuing some knowledge outside the basis of his study is something that can be found in general in this era.

One of the strategies in skill development is to learn several other fields of science outside the department being studied. A person needs a variety of soft skills outside the knowledge of the study programme being studied for several important reasons that cover various aspects of professional and personal life.

This development can be seen in several technology domains such as Programming (CSS, Python, and C+), Digital Design such as (Adobe Illustrator, Blender, Figma) and data analysis systems such as SQL (System Querry Language) which are growing rapidly. Currently, the development of technology is the main factor why many Generation Z and Generation Alpha are starting to learn basic coding or graphic design. In addition, the study of technology and graphic design also allows a person to be more familiar with various potentials that will encourage innovation.

Learning coding and graphic design as complementary skills is essential as both together enhance an individual's ability to contribute more effectively in various projects and industries. Coding allows one to create, optimise and maintain functional applications or websites, while graphic design ensures an attractive and intuitive look and user interface (UI).

This combination not only improves work efficiency, but also provides flexibility in completing projects end-to-end, from concept to implementation. Having these two skills will enable one to communicate better with cross-disciplinary teams, take a bigger role in creative and technical projects, and increase career opportunities in fields that increasingly demand multidisciplinary capabilities, such as technology, marketing, and digital media.

If one wants to delve into the world of consulting, then in addition to negotiation and public speaking skills, there is also a need for data processing skills. Data analyst skills are in high demand in this era as data has become one of the most valuable assets for organisations across industries. In an increasingly information-driven world, the ability to collect, analyse and interpret data enables companies to make more informed and evidence-based decisions.

Data analysts help identify trends, patterns, and insights that can improve operational efficiency, optimise marketing strategies, and develop better products or services that meet consumer needs. Moreover, this proficiency enables organisations to remain competitive in the fast-changing global marketplace, respond to changes in consumer behaviour, and navigate business challenges more effectively.

In addition to the need to improve skills in mastering technology, interpersonal communication is one of the skills that need to be developed in public speaking. This is because in work a person is not only working in the field behind the scenes, but also must be prepared to anticipate if there is a moment that requires negotiation. This skill is another thing that needs to be developed especially as someone who is in the sales and public relations profession.

Given the importance of increasing skills beyond what is learnt in a textbook especially in the rapidly growing industrial era in the 21st century, learning cross-disciplinary skills is a strategic investment in competing in the job search. As one of the providers to Generation Z and Generation Alpha, Dian Nusantara University applies learning and innovation to its students in order to improve the competence of graduates to meet the needs of the world of science and technology-based industry and entrepreneurship in 2030.
