Multilingual Language Learning and the Role of Language in Students' Future Careers

As we know, language is one of the main factors in human life in terms of communication and social aspects. Language is an essential element for humans to convey their ideas and opinions. In the aspect of learning, humans have been introduced to language from an early age with simple conversations by their parents. The language that a person has learnt since they were a child and becomes the language used in everyday life is called mother tongue. With language as a medium of instruction, humans can carry out activities and form social connections.
With the era of globalisation and industrial acceleration in various fields, one must automatically explore several skills. One of the skills that cannot be ignored is the ability to master several languages at once along with the culture of each country whose language has been learned.
Of course, when it comes to language learning, one will generally gravitate towards English first as a universal language that will facilitate the learning of other languages. English becomes the language of instruction in learning other languages due to its status as a global lingua franca used widely in education and academic reference.
Educational institutions and language learning platforms often use English as a basis for teaching other languages as many learners around the world have a basic or intermediate understanding of English.
As an institution that prepares graduates who will compete in the industrial era 4.0, Dian Nusantara University provides English Literature learning facilities that will pave the way for graduates to work abroad or with someone from abroad. This is in accordance with one of UNDIRA's goals, namely "Producing graduates with noble character, entrepreneurial spirit, and global insight who are able to answer future challenges".
Through learning several languages, a person will have greater flexibility in applying for jobs in overseas companies. In addition to the prospects that can be obtained through learning English because of the large amount of traffic from foreign companies that have entered Indonesia, learning other languages besides English for students will bring advantages in applying to foreign companies.
In addition to learning English, of course, learning several languages, one will have greater flexibility in applying for jobs in foreign companies. In addition to the prospects that can be obtained through learning English because of the large amount of traffic from foreign companies that have entered Indonesia, learning other languages besides English for students will bring advantages in applying to foreign companies.
In recent years several regions in Indonesia have become investment sectors for foreign companies such as Japan, China, and America. For example, around the Jakarta area, more precisely around Central Jakarta and North Jakarta, there are companies such as PT Makes Design Aid, a Japanese-based company and PT Haidilao Hot Pot. Both companies recommend and even require someone to master Japanese (minimum requirement equivalent to N3) and Mandarin.
In addition, if one is pursuing a career in business and marketing such as insurance sales or a negotiator if one of the clients is an expatriate of a certain country, then learning several languages to achieve a positive level of negotiation is a worthwhile investment for the graduate's career as a multilingual.
Learning several languages at once for a career path is beneficial because it increases competitiveness and professional opportunities in the global labour market. Moreover, the ability to speak multiple languages or more enhances cognitive skills, such as problem-solving, multitasking, and creativity, which are highly valued by employers. Understanding multiple languages also allows one to access a wider range of information and literature, deepen knowledge and insights in specific fields, and expand their professional network. Overall, multilingualism not only enhances career opportunities, but also provides a competitive edge in an increasingly globalised and connected world of work.
