Building Togetherness in the Warmth of the Hearth: The Meaning of Christmas Joy

"There is no place like home," is a phrase that describes the comfort of soul and body in the right place. With Christmas approaching, eagerly awaited around the world, people prepare various activities to celebrate. Christmas, derived from the word "Natalis," means birth. In the history of the Christian Bible, Christmas celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ, established on December 25 each year since the 4th century by Pope Julius I.
Besides celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ, Christmas also symbolizes togetherness, intimacy, and warmth. For the working community, especially students, lecturers, and academics at Dian Nusantara University (UNDIRA), Christmas is the perfect moment to gather with family or loved ones.
This gathering moment also offers an opportunity for giving. Giving in the context of Christmas is not just material; it can be as simple as listening to a friend's story, appreciating a colleague, or encouraging a student struggling to complete their studies.
Christmas is often associated with "home" and "hearth." "Home" has special meaning for some individuals. Intimacy is seen in family gatherings around the fireplace, sharing stories, and enjoying simplicity on Christmas Eve. This shows that home is not just material but also about closeness and comfort among individuals or groups.
The warmth of Christmas teaches that amid busyness, there is a moment to take time, reflect, and realize that togetherness is a valuable asset that enriches our life journey. Society is invited to strengthen, support, and understand each other amid differences.
Psalm 133:1 emphasizes solidarity in daily life: "Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity!"
For UNDIRA students who are far from family at Christmas, or lecturers busy with academic responsibilities, togetherness can be found with friends, colleagues, or in personal introspection moments. This togetherness becomes the "hearth" that warms the heart and provides peace amid loneliness or life's pressures.
Christmas at the end of the year symbolizes both an end and a beginning. In the spirit of togetherness, we close the year with gratitude and open a new chapter with better hopes. The warmth of the Christmas hearth symbolizes for all of us—students, lecturers, and academics—to build an inclusive, meaningful, and supportive environment.
Christmas is not just a routine celebration but a moment to build sincere togetherness, be a home for everyone, and foster the spirit of giving in a life often marked by individualism. Thus, we can find the true meaning of Christmas: the happiness born from the warmth of togetherness and the love we share.
