Educating with Heart: The Foundations of a Leader

21 Juni 2024

An educational institution of any level is obliged to be an extension of the government to fulfil the right to learn of its citizens. This is for the sake of forming a young generation that is ready to succeed the country as a leader. However, with the many criticisms that have generated several conversations about disappointment with education, moral and character building disappointments, and protests directed against government institutions. This has led to questions about how education can shape character.

Martin Hubert, a renowned philosopher once stated that the absorption of life messages through what is absorbed in daily life is one of the keys to how a person knows life. In shaping a leader figure, keep in mind that apart from the concept of education to train cognition, there are other aspects such as character building that will have an impact on the way a person leads. The spirit of leadership is formed with an idea for the progress of all parties.

Idealism can be a person's drive to change a concept, and can be a catalyst for movement for himself and others. Idealism will be born if there is learning from life. According to the Rector of Dian Nusantara University, Prof. Dr. H. Suharyadi - stated that in his previous life even though he came from a family that could be considered well-off, but in living the life of Prof. Dr. H. Suharyadi he still lived his life with full persistence. His life was also full of abundant social scope until he was appointed Dean of UMB.

Prof. Dr H. Suharyadi also explained that in addition to cognitive learning, the formation of one's character will also affect the moral formation of a leader. "You know, living the suffering of others will hone your humanity. We have enough to eat. Abundant enough. Meanwhile, those around us have to work hard without knowing whether they can eat every day. This tirakat is not only to be loyal to their suffering, but also to pray for them to rise from their misery. Complete this tirakat by sharing when we have the ability to give," is one of Prof. Dr H. Suharyadi's advice on leadership.

For Prof. Ir Suharyadi, an education is not only limited to the explanation and epistemology of the knowledge absorbed by students, education is not just a form of "producing products", and education is not an absolute thing in shaping one's character. Leadership requires understanding not only of oneself, but also of others. That's where a form of networking is needed to learn the attitudes and backgrounds of each individual to achieve a good relationship.

In addition, the formation of a person's character honestly begins with a harmonious family relationship. "A person's character is greatly influenced by the first universe he gets from home and family", according to Prof. Dr. H. Suharyadi, family is one of the main sources in moral formation. This is because the family is the root source of a child's education. Therefore, in the application of learning for a person to become a wise leader, it is also necessary to have a good family. "The world is not entirely good, but also not entirely evil" is one of the advice from Prof. Dr. H. Suharyadi.

"The need to be vulnerable" refers to the importance of being open and honest about our weaknesses, feelings and uncertainties to others. This concept emphasises that showing vulnerability is not a sign of weakness, but rather strength. By being vulnerable, we enable deeper and more authentic relationships, both in personal and professional contexts. This can create trust, empathy and stronger connections with others, as well as assist us in personal and emotional growth.

Thus for the people of Dian Nusantara University (UNDIRA), it is necessary to establish character integrity and also improve morals and manners. This is because a cognitive education can only take a person as far as what is learned, everything comes from consideration from the heart even decision making for a leader.
