The Importance of Ethics and Culture in All Fields of Work

The career goals of today's generation Z vary greatly and are influenced by a variety of factors such as; individual interests, values, economic conditions, and their surrounding social environment. It is important for Generation Z in education to explore their interests, values and available opportunities to make decisions about career paths that suit their preferences.
Some recent research shows that Generation Z tends to have a high interest in entrepreneurship. They are often attracted to environments that give them greater freedom in their work. There are also those who are interested in becoming freelancers or working in a dynamic startup environment and they tend to look for flexibility and opportunities to engage in profitable projects to provide a surplus to their lives.
However, many Gen Zers still prefer to be employees in large companies that offer guaranteed financial stability, clear career development opportunities, and other benefits. Some research shows that factors such as financial stability, job security, and social security are still important considerations for most Generation Z students.
Generation Z students who choose to work either in a company, entrepreneurship or become a freelancer after completing their studies are required to understand ethics and culture in the world of work, because the application of ethics in the world of work is very important for career growth. Ethics and culture have interrelated roles in social, business, and organizational contexts.
Of course, to understand ethics and culture in all fields of work, generation Z needs to first understand the basic rules that shape individual character in the world of work, such as:
- Integrity: Acting in accordance with moral values and principles and following the applicable code of ethics.
- Responsibility: Accepting responsibility for actions and decisions taken, including admitting mistakes without harming other colleagues.
- Honesty: Maintaining honesty in all interactions, including providing accurate and transparent information.
- Cooperation and Mutual Respect: Collaborate with coworkers, value their contributions, and work as a team to achieve common goals. Respect the diversity of coworkers such as different backgrounds, cultures, religions, and perspectives.
- Professionalism: Demonstrate professional behavior in all aspects of work, including in dressing, communicating, and interacting with co-workers, customers, and business partners.
Applying these ethical principles creates a culture of a healthy and productive work environment where values such as integrity, honesty and mutual respect are present. This encourages good collaboration and innovation in order to increase cohesiveness among coworkers, improve job satisfaction, and overall effectiveness of company performance.
Given the importance for Generation Z students to understand Ethics and Culture in various contexts, lecturers at Universitas Dian Nusantara (UNDIRA) provide ongoing guidance on ethical issues from the beginning of their course journey until nearing the completion of their studies. This initiative underscores UNDIRA's commitment to embedding core values in its educational approach.
