The Dynamics of Communication in the Carok Tradition: UNDIRA Student Explores Phenomenological Connections and Madurese Local Wisdom

Uncovering the meaning behind meaning” may be an apt description of communication studies. At a glance, communication might appear simple; in reality, it is inherently multidisciplinary.

This is because communication as a field does not operate within a single dimension. Rather, it engages multiple perspectives—such as psychology, history, culture, management, philosophy, and more—in order to arrive at objective conclusions.

Based on this premise, communication serves as a foundational lens through which most phenomena and an individual's intents alongside agency around us can be examined. This perspective inspired a student from the Communication Studies Program at Universitas Dian Nusantara (UNDIRA) to conduct a field study on one of Madura’s cultural traditions, namely Carok.

Carok is essentially a traditional form of duel between two parties to resolve conflict. Although legally regarded as dangerous due to the involvement of sharp weapons, within Madurese society, Carok is perceived as a functional form of punishment as well as a cultural norm.

Referring back to communication principles—where communication functions as a process through which individuals or groups exchange ideas and share information—the student argues that the communicative elements embedded in the Carok tradition can be analyzed through phenomenological and sociological approaches, along with interpretations of symbolic meaning.

The study employs Husserl’s (1970) principles of epoche (bracketing assumptions) and phenomenological reduction to uncover the pure essence of the Carok phenomenon. In addition, Van Manen’s (1990) reflective analysis approach is utilized to provide a more detailed description of the narrative building blocks and contextual communication embedded within the tradition.

The research proceeds to the data collection phase through interviews and field observations involving Madurese individuals from diverse demographic backgrounds. To ensure systematic mapping and valid conclusions, the student conducts data evaluation and reduction based on relevant patterns and analytical needs.

The findings can be distilled into several key points, one of which highlights that the relationship between communication and the local culture of Carok represents an implementation of the concept of Communication Dynamics.

Communication dynamics within the Carok tradition reflect a dynamic process of human interaction influenced by cultural, social, normative, and technological elements. These factors contribute to the formation of interaction patterns (both verbal and non-verbal), communicative styles (in this case, Carok as a form of tribal communication, self-representation, and local law enforcement), as well as the use of local media in preserving and disseminating cultural values.

This research also demonstrates that communication is not merely a medium for transmitting information between individuals; it also sustains the existence and representation of cultural identities and social beliefs over time.

In today’s highly dynamic era, communication serves as an intellectual instrument to interpret, construct, and bridge the complexities of ever-evolving socio-cultural realities.

The Communication Studies Program at Universitas Dian Nusantara stands as an academic space that fosters individuals who are intellectually sharp, adaptive, and sensitive to the dynamics of communication patterns and best practices in society.

For fellow UNDIRA students who aspire to move beyond conventional understanding and contribute to shaping meaningful narratives and social change, this is the moment to move forward with UNDIRA—becoming part of a generation of communicators who not only interpret meaning but also construct it with sophistication and impact.
