Quiet Covering: Hiding Expectations and Identity to Fit In
The workplace is an environment that requires individuals to adapt and socialize effectively. This is due to its inherent diversity, which ranges from the various ideologies of its members to significant generation gaps. However, even in workspaces that are inclusive and support diversity, the phenomenon of "Quiet Covering" has emerged. This phenomenon subtly presents a challenge for both companies and teamwork within every unit.
Quiet Covering refers to the act of hiding or downplaying one's personal identity or unique qualities to blend in and conform more easily within the work environment. This can manifest in stiff and overly formal behavior, or the concealment of personal beliefs and other private matters.
Currently, the phenomenon of Quiet Covering is a prominent topic, especially among Generation Z. Although Gen Z is known for its culture of authenticity and a tendency to be vocally expressive, many are now choosing to conceal their true selves and be more selective about revealing their hidden talents in the workplace. This can be attributed to several factors, such as:
-
Avoiding stereotypes, discrimination, and judgment from superiors and colleagues.
-
Maintaining professional relationships and harmony in the workplace.
-
Increasing career opportunities and recognition for their professional efforts.
-
Reducing conflicts that could disrupt workflow.
-
Avoiding the risk of being assigned an excessive workload beyond their job description.
According to Kenji Yoshino, a Legal Scholar and the Chief Justice Earl Warren Professor of Constitutional Law at New York University School of Law, while formality is necessary in the professional world, a culture that embraces authenticity can significantly foster personal development.
Although it is done as a form of self-defense and to build a professional image, continuous Quiet Covering can lead to prolonged stress, which becomes dangerous as it accumulates. Ultimately, it can cause a decline in both individual performance and teamwork. However, there are several ways to address Quiet Covering, including:
-
Building a Safe Work Environment
At work, we are not just loyal entities but also individuals with aspirations. Simultaneously, the work environment should provide the freedom for individuals to show their vulnerable sides without the threat of an ultimatum. This can be built through open and mindful communication regarding differences in culture, hobbies, or tastes—all, of course, within the bounds of professionalism.
-
Practice Self-Reflection
Reflect on the parts of yourself that you often "cover" or change for the sake of social comfort (e.g., your style of speaking, beliefs, or cultural expressions). Then, identify authentic aspects of yourself that can positively contribute to your performance.
-
Increase Support for Mental Health Awareness
Not everything has to run at 100% output, and not all emotions should be suppressed. Today, amidst social and economic pressures, mental health and burnout are no longer taboo or shameful topics. Therefore, to enhance harmony in the workplace, it is necessary to normalize a non-judgmental attitude and create a sense of psychological safety.
In facing the growing phenomenon of Quiet Covering in the professional sphere, it is crucial for the younger generation to prepare themselves not only with technical competencies but also with the ability to think openly and adapt to diversity. In a dynamic and turbulent professional world, the ability to remain authentic while respecting differences is key to building healthy collaboration.
