Does Fasting Induce Lazinesss? Essential Guidelines for University Studies During Ramadan
We have once again arrived at a period of profound grace and blessing. In 2026, we observe the Holy Month of Ramadan 1447 H. Throughout this 30-day period, Muslims partake in the obligation of fasting from dawn (Fajr) until dusk (Maghrib).
The significance of this Holy Month extends further. According to a Hadith narrated by Al-Bukhari:
إِذَا دَخَلَ رَمَضَانُ صُفِّدَتِ الشَّيَاطِينُ ، وَفُتِحَتْ أَبُوَابُ الجَّنَةِ ، وَغُلِّقَتْ أَبْوَابُ النَّارِ
Ramadan represents a spiritual momentum wherein demons are chained, the gates of Hell are firmly closed, and the gates of Paradise are wide open. Furthermore, it is a period of multiplied rewards, signifying an opportunity granted by Allah SWT for the faithful to engage in righteous deeds, elevate their worship, and give in charity.
Although these spiritual conditions mitigate the intensity of temptation and worldly desires, they do not eliminate inherent human challenges, ranging from negligence to the squandering of time.
UNDIRA students may experience physiological and psychological side effects during fasting, particularly during the second and third weeks. Somnolence, lethargy, reduced patience, emotional dysregulation, and the temptation to break the fast prematurely despite being in good health constitute significant challenges throughout this 30-day period.
Nevertheless, these challenges can be mitigated through the following strategies, designed to enhance both spiritual devotion and daily academic productivity:
-
Implement Effective Time Management: Seize the moment! Despite experiencing hunger and thirst, fasting should not serve as a justification for wasting time or neglecting religious and secular duties. Allocate energy toward constructive pursuits such as reading, writing, studying, and creative endeavors. This strategic allocation enhances cognitive focus while serving as a diversion from unproductive activities.
-
Maintain Nutritional Balance: Fasting periods do not justify overconsumption during Iftar (breaking the fast) or Suhoor (pre-dawn meal). Fasting facilitates cellular regeneration and metabolic recalibration. Therefore, it is the optimal time to optimize health through an adequate intake of fiber, vitamins, and minerals. Furthermore, it is crucial to regulate the consumption of high-carbohydrate and high-sugar foods. Excessive sugar intake, combined with an altered eating schedule, exacerbates fatigue and somnolence.
-
Minimize Sedentary Behaviors: Fasting does not equate to adopting a sedentary lifestyle. While dedicating time to worship is essential, maintaining physical fitness is equally paramount. The fasting period provides the body with a respite from excessive caloric and fat intake. This presents an excellent opportunity to engage in light cardiovascular exercises, such as jogging, to sustain overall physical well-being.
-
Increase Spiritual Observances: As previously noted, the Holy Month of Ramadan is designated for accumulating spiritual rewards and engaging in righteous acts. Ritual worship, such as the five daily prayers, serves not only a religious purpose but also acts as an exercise in cognitive focus and mindfulness. Consistent worship cultivates discipline and effectively counteracts fasting-induced drowsiness.
Fasting transcends temporary dietary restriction; it encompasses profound physical and spiritual benefits. By adhering to the aforementioned guidelines, it is hoped that UNDIRA students will experience a Ramadan filled with divine blessings and constructive outcomes. Remain visionary, with integrity and professionalism, UNDIRA students! Wishing you a blessed and fulfilling fasting month.
