Understanding the Turnitin System: Mechanisms and Tips for Students to Pass Plagiarism Checks
The proliferation of information flow through the Internet of Things (IoT) has significantly streamlined the research and publication process, particularly within the academic sphere. However, with the rapid acceleration and intervention brought about by technology and Artificial Intelligence (AI), instances of academic dishonesty are becoming increasingly prevalent, driven by the widespread utilization of AI and a culture of instant gratification.
Plagiarism, Fact Fabrication, and Data Falsification are tangible examples of aggressive AI utilization in the current landscape. While academic dishonesty via AI is often trivialized, it has the potential to disrupt the equilibrium of the academic world, which prioritizes both professional publication and integrity.
To anticipate these issues, the academic world has developed a verification solution known as Turnitin. Briefly, Turnitin is a software system tasked with identifying similarities (Similarity Index) while simultaneously verifying originality.
Submission: The process begins with the submission or uploading of a journal manuscript to the Turnitin system. Consequently, the system commences operations by scanning the document in its entirety. Cross-Reference Check: Subsequently, Turnitin performs a cross-reference check against various sources to determine the percentage of similarity between the manuscript and original sources; this process generates the Similarity Index.
UNDIRA students should be aware that, generally, the accepted similarity percentage ranges from 15% to 30%, or lower. Reporting: In the final stage, Turnitin issues a plagiarism report once document identification is complete. Students receive this information upon reviewing their submission within the system, allowing them to rectify errors and resubmit their work.
Having understood the operational mechanisms of Turnitin, here are several tips for UNDIRA students to ensure their Final Projects meet the standards for passing Turnitin verification:
-
Utilize AI Checker Software: UNDIRA students can employ various free online software tools to re-verify AI-generated content in their writing, such as Quillbot, Grammarly, Originality, etc.
-
Paraphrase Your Manuscript Carefully: Paraphrasing is not merely replacing words with synonyms. Be aware that simple synonym substitution can still be detected by the Turnitin system. Remember, effective paraphrasing involves retaining the core idea while expressing it in your own distinct language.
-
Always Include Citations: As academics who are not only Visionary but also possess Integrity and Responsibility, properly citing research is mandatory. Citations do not merely serve as accountability for the information presented; they also facilitate the Turnitin system in analyzing the manuscript effectively.
It is hoped that this article serves as a reference for UNDIRA students to pay closer attention to detail and proper writing formatting in future final projects. The strategy to pass Turnitin goes beyond simply adjusting similarity percentages; it is about your accountability as an academic and the comprehensive enforcement of originality in written work.
If UNDIRA students wish to learn more about the schemes or seek necessary research resources, UNDIRA boasts a high-quality library and has collaborated with DISPUSIP to provide an up-to-date information databank to assist in your research!
