Connecting Devices and Driving Digital Transformation: The Importance of Computer Networks in the Internet of Things (IoT) Era

The development of today’s information technology industry is aligned with the rapid expansion of the digital ecosystem—spanning sectors from industry to entertainment. In the industrial sector, information technology is no longer limited to large corporations or government institutions, but is increasingly utilized by the general public in daily activities and by businesses of all scales.
To build an integrated business sector, communities now depend heavily on the use of Computer Networks. A well-established computer network enables seamless connectivity between digital devices, facilitates efficient data exchange, and fosters an integrated communication ecosystem.
Therefore, computer networking knowledge plays a key role in supporting connectivity and advancing various sectors, particularly for MSMEs (Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises) engaged in technopreneurship. However, not all members of society have equal access to education and digital literacy, especially in terms of foundational knowledge in computer networks.
As part of its commitment to improving the technological competence of the nation's youth, the academic community is tasked with providing inclusive education across different segments of society. In response to the digital literacy challenge, Universitas Dian Nusantara (UNDIRA), in collaboration with Bina Nusantara University (BINUS), have once conducted a Community Service Program (PkM) aimed at enhancing understanding and competence in computer networking for youth members of Karang Taruna in Tanjung Duren, West Jakarta.
The implementation of this program was met with positive feedback and high enthusiasm from the participants. Members of Karang Taruna were introduced to both theoretical foundations and hands-on practical sessions on building and maintaining computer networks.
They later participated in a Competency Test designed to assess their overall understanding of computer networks and network mapping. The training covered core concepts in networking, including an introduction to various types of networks such as LAN, WAN, MAN, and VPN.
Through this practice-based competency evaluation, participants demonstrated their ability to understand the function of different network types like LAN and WAN. Furthermore, they were able to apply their knowledge in setting up basic network installations, configuring internet connections, and independently managing router settings. These achievements reflect their dedication and growing proficiency in computer network fundamentals.
In light of society’s increasing demand for IT literacy, UNDIRA’s Informatics Engineering Program offers the ideal environment for individuals seeking to deepen their knowledge in network management, network security, and network topology design.
Beyond classroom learning, Informatics Engineering at UNDIRA actively encourages students to engage in research and tech-based community initiatives, especially in strengthening digital capacity through local training programs and the annual Technofest—a platform that fosters innovation and creativity among students.
For those interested in network maintenance or the development of digital systems, the Informatics Engineering Program at UNDIRA @Tanjung Duren offers a relevant and practical curriculum that aligns with industry demands in the current IoT era. Universitas Dian Nusantara (UNDIRA) remains committed to its role as an educational hub that empowers a digitally inclusive, independent, and globally competitive generation.
