Quality Research and Inquiry Supporting Indonesian Literacy: Unpacking the "Slow Science" Approach

24 Februari 2026

Technological and network accessibility now facilitate highly rapid information distribution. However, amidst the inundation of information frequently encountered in the virtual realm, the emergence of various hoaxes and details from unverified sources is frequently observed.

Consequently, the necessity for publications and research is currently garnering renewed attention. Both fundamentally aim to minimize misinformation and data discrepancies. Research publication serves as a strategic measure in the current digitalization era to cultivate learning awareness across exact sciences, social sciences, and cultural studies, alongside fostering research interest and public literacy.

In research and publication, accuracy constitutes an indispensable aspect. This fundamentally relates to the accountable nature of scholarly research and publications. Furthermore, their capacity to effectively reach the public warrants careful consideration.

Nevertheless, both are heavily constrained by deadlines and topic relevance. Currently, algorithms serve as a primary determinant of how rapidly a publication can garner public attention. Consequently, driven by such strategies, a publication culture that increasingly prioritizes quantity over quality, often known as the publish or perish mentality, continues to proliferate.

As a result, junktification, defined as the publication of scientific articles and journals lacking adequate quality, is becoming increasingly widespread. Furthermore, the instant gratification mentality and the fabrication of facts across various social media channels based on subjectivity or word of mouth further exacerbate this phenomenon.

As a remedy to this culture, the Slow Science methodology is beginning to emerge within the publication and research ecosystem. According to a study published in TheConversation ID, Slow Science refers to a paradigm that challenges the obsession with quantity, career advancement, and monetary incentives. Slow Science encourages academics to engage in extensive reading, deepen their intellectual reflections, conduct experiments, and embrace failure to produce comprehensive and enduring research outputs.

Within the academic ecosystem, certain disciplines inherently prioritize the Slow Science methodology. These primarily include studies requiring profound approaches particularly those related to humanity and history, reflective approaches such as social sciences, humanities, and psychology, as well as analytical approaches like political science, law, and macroeconomics.

Although the application of Slow Science is frequently associated with humanities and philosophy, several exact sciences also implement this approach. For instance, Environmental Impact Studies spanning Ecology and Civil Engineering, Medical Studies, and Biotechnology represent examples of exact sciences that similarly promote Slow Science. This necessity arises because various branches of exact sciences are also obligated to consider humanitarian and ethical aspects. In this context, the Slow Science methodology encourages multidisciplinary research within the exact sciences, particularly concerning humanity and ethical codes.

The presence of Slow Science further encourages academics to minimize artificial intelligence utilization by providing adequate time to deepen their investigation of phenomena, thereby fostering more authentic research and publications.

As an institution upholding the core values of Vision, Integrity, and Professionalism, Universitas Dian Nusantara (UNDIRA) actively encourages its entire academic community to contribute to the development of innovations and research that deliver tangible impacts to society. The University Library, in collaboration with DISPUSIP Jakarta, has implemented the integration of the Gale system and the Digital Library as a high quality integrated electronic resource to support the research and publication endeavors of the UNDIRA community.

The Institute for Research and Community Service (LRPM) at UNDIRA also collaborates to facilitate lecturers in developing Community Service outputs alongside science and technology advancements that are highly beneficial to society.

Returning to the Slow Science principle which emphasizes high quality and beneficial outputs, together with UNDIRA, we fully support the execution of scientific publications and research, alongside the development of science and technology that is not only precisely targeted but also impactful and fully accountable for current and future generations.
