Celebrating a Year of Blessings With the Vigor of the Fire Horse: Harmony of Imlek in the Indonesia

15 Februari 2026

Since the 14th BC, specifically during the reign of the Shang Dynasty, a day of profound significance has been annually commemorated by the Chinese diaspora worldwide. On February 17, 2026, we will once again welcome the Chinese New Year, Kongzhili 2577, universally known as Imlek.

However, beyond its conventional associations—such as the lighting of lanterns, the exchange of angpao (red envelopes), and the prevalence of the color red as a harbinger of spirit and fortune—this day, celebrated by our Chinese brethren, possesses a deep mystique and substantive meaning.

Fellow UNDIRA colleagues, you have likely encountered the question, "What is your Shio (Zodiac)?" at some point. It is pertinent to clarify that this concept is intrinsically linked to Chinese mythological culture. It recounts the legend of twelve animals that embody human characteristics, destiny, and the lunar calendar.

Distinct from the standardization of the Gregorian calendar, the Chinese New Year observes not only the solar shift but also the lunar cycle. Each year is characterized by a specific zodiac sign, and this year, we enter the epoch of the 'Fire Horse'.

The significance of the Fire Horse in the Chinese New Year 2577 (Imlek) signifies a combination that denotes not only strength but also agility and decisiveness in taking action. This is undoubtedly indicative of the culture of the contemporary younger generation, both in daily life and within the professional sphere.

Historically, the horse has been symbolized as an emblem of strength and social status. As a mode of transport for warriors during ancient warfare, the horse was viewed as a symbol of power due to its utility for elite cavalry and high-ranking officials. However, in various scholarly studies, the horse is also interpreted as a symbol of wisdom and freedom.

The element of fire, often associated with destruction, holds an alternative meaning within the symbolism of the Fire Horse: a nuance of courage, unbreakable spiritual transformation, creativity, revolution, enlightenment, and mental resilience.

Both elements align seamlessly with the representations of modern dynamics, which demand that we remain adaptive and resilient. The symbolism of the Fire Horse preserves a narrative of character and persistence, adopted by the younger generation through various innovations and opportunities to achieve "extraordinary success."

Reflecting upon the theme of this year's Imlek celebration in Indonesia, "Harmoni Imlek Nusantara" (Harmony of Imlek in the Archipelago), the Chinese New Year is not merely a momentum experienced by and curated for the Chinese community, but rather for all societal groups.

This theme clearly prioritizes the values of diversity and inclusivity among us. If we reflect upon one of the foundational principles of the Indonesian state, "Persatuan Indonesia" (Indonesian Unity), this meaning of inclusivity further reinforces the theme of "Harmoni Imlek Nusantara."

From a modern academic perspective, a cultural form that initially functioned as a high-significance image and identity has evolved into a discipline or field of inquiry containing pedagogical value capable of intergenerational transmission. This inheritance encompasses not only culture as an academic manifestation but also a form of permanence that will endure as long as human civilization continues.

In this Imlek celebration, let us recall the symbolism of the Fire Horse, which not only charges at the vanguard but also fortifies our mental resilience amidst the crises and uncertainties that may besiege our hearts.

Happy Chinese New Year 2577. Together, we shall achieve and weave a year full of blessings!
