Jakarta Anniversary and Smart City Expectations: The Role of Student Research and Studies

Jakarta's birthday is celebrated every 22 June, marking the day Fatahillah captured the port of Sunda Kelapa from the Portuguese in 1527 and renamed it Jayakarta.
For the community, this celebration has deep historical and cultural significance, reinforcing a sense of identity and pride in the capital city. Especially for students, Jakarta's anniversary is a moment of reflection on the contribution of the younger generation in building a better city. Through various academic and social activities, students are expected to better understand the history, challenges, and potential of Jakarta, as well as play an active role in innovation and the development of an inclusive and sustainable city.
Jakarta's anniversary can be a moment that encourages research and development innovation because the celebration strengthens the focus on the city's development and inspires various parties to think creatively in solving urban problems. On the city's anniversary, public and government attention is usually focused on evaluating Jakarta's achievements and challenges. This creates opportunities for academics, researchers and students to propose new ideas and innovative solutions.
In addition, Jakarta's anniversary celebration can be a platform to showcase the latest relevant research and development results, and gain support and attention from the government and private sector, which in turn can accelerate the implementation of innovative solutions in the city.
Dian Nusantara University is a place for students to express their designs, creativity and innovation. UNDIRA provides various activities that support student research such as the LLDIKTI research programme with projects such as the Green Revolution of Hydroponic Plants and also several contributions from UNDIRA lecturers in research funded by LLDIKTI. One of the contributions that students can make is in the development of the city of Jakarta towards the Smart City concept.
One of the concepts that Jakarta is aiming for is the Smart City concept as a form of progress for Indonesia Emas 2045. The Jakarta Smart City concept is a strategic initiative designed to utilise digital technology and innovation to improve the quality of life of citizens, the efficiency of public services, and environmental sustainability in the capital city of Indonesia.
Jakarta Smart City aims to create a more connected, responsive and sustainable city through the implementation of various technology-based solutions. One of the main focuses is the improvement of public services with the use of mobile applications that allow citizens to report infrastructure problems in real-time, such as the Qlue, JakLingko and Jakarta Kini (JAKI) applications.
In addition, the integration of alternative-fuelled transport systems such as those found in the Transjakarta fleet with its electric buses as a smart parking solution helps reduce congestion and improve mobility. Jakarta Smart City also encourages active citizen engagement through digital platforms that enable public participation in the decision-making process.
Through various majors at UNDIRA such as Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Electrical Engineering along with the application of education based on the basis of science and technology according to its vision which reads "To become a trusted and professional university with a global outlook, to meet the needs of the industrial and entrepreneurial world based on Science and Technology in 2030". With the creativity and innovation poured into various projects and also education through WEBINAR which is held consistently by UNDIRA, it is hoped that graduates will be able to contribute to the formation of Jakarta's identity as a Smart City which is a pillar of Indonesia's technological development and innovation.
