The AI Bubble Trend: Understanding the AI Boom in the Public Sphere, Workforce Absorption, and the Younger Generation
Artificial Intelligence, or AI for short, has now become an indispensable partner in human life as a whole. From its simple functions as a discussion partner or work colleague to executing strategic roles—such as in Albania, where AI has been utilized in high-level ministerial functions—to being responsible for managing data centers that distribute information.
Referring to this context, we now understand AI's capability to manage data while generating responses in real-time—or in other words, providing responses simultaneously with minimal delay. However, alongside AI's success, we are increasingly haunted by the potential of AI displacing us in our daily lives.
Some time ago, perhaps UNDIRA friends (fellow students) heard a specific term: the "AI Bubble." What is actually meant by the AI Bubble? Just imagine blowing a bubble; it gets bigger the more air is blown into it, but eventually, the bubble cannot sustain the air inside and will burst—the same concept applies to the AI Bubble.
According to Bill Gates, the AI Bubble phenomenon refers to the rapid growth in demand and usage of AI that exceeds its actual performance and fair value.
He also continued that this phenomenon is similar to the Dot-Com Era, or the time when the Internet was first implemented globally. However, amidst the accelerating demographic bonus, here are several impacts of the growing AI Bubble:
-
The Widening Gap in Workforce Absorption and Worker Survivability
The existence of AI, which can support fully automated work 24 hours a day, can spark debate among companies regarding the necessity of hiring humans. Furthermore, as reported by the YouTube channel @Mackard, aggressive AI implementation can also create a skill and knowledge gap between junior and senior workers.
The AI Bubble fundamentally affects human psychology, briefly summed up as: "It is easier for me to discuss with AI, which offers better efficiency and competence than juniors." Initially, AI indeed functions as a supporter helping juniors develop their skills, but with aggressive automation and instant gratification in problem-solving, this can bring its own set of problems. Gradually, this will lead to difficulties in workforce absorption.
-
Tech Startups Unable to Compete with "Tech Giants"
If we look at market segmentation, stocks, and the economy, we can understand that the majority of the largest AI users and suppliers today are companies like Microsoft, Google, and Amazon. Broadly speaking, this makes it difficult for tech startups to compete with these technology giants.
Additionally, the hardware development segment also needs to allocate more expensive resources to compensate for AI sophistication, subsequently causing the prices of many devices to soar in the market.
-
Information Authentication
Excessive AI use will naturally create a fast-paced ecosystem, especially in information management and content distribution. Basically, UNDIRA friends, we need to understand that in content creation, there are guidelines and governance to ensure our work maintains originality. With the AI Bubble phenomenon, we need to be twice as vigilant about AI developments that could plagiarize our work.
Facing the potential bursting of the "bubble," which could widen the gap in workforce absorption and knowledge transfer among the workforce, we must look back at the human role with one thing AI does not possess—character.
The role of the University and a Lifelong Learning mentality become the most fundamental solutions for UNDIRA friends. Dian Nusantara University (UNDIRA) is committed through its governance values—Visionary, Integrity, and Professionalism—to participate in transforming the young generation into an incubator capable of critical thinking, creativity, and soft skills—human attributes that cannot be replicated by AI.
By making education a continuous process, we not only patch existing skill gaps but also ensure that when the AI trend shakes, our career foundations remain solid because they are built on true expertise, not just technological hype.
