UNDIRA Students Distribute #UNDIRAPEDULI Donations for Sumatra Disaster Relief

Jakarta, February 3, 2026 – On November 25, 2025, a series of natural disasters struck several regions in Sumatra, most notably in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra. Flash floods, carrying significant amounts of woody debris, caused extensive damage to hundreds of thousands of residential homes and public facilities.

Beyond the material losses, data released by the National Disaster Management Authority (BNPB) as of February 3, 2026, indicates a tragic toll: 1,204 fatalities, 140 individuals reported missing, and approximately 91,000 displaced persons across ten regencies.

In response to the impact of the disaster on our fellow citizens in Sumatra, the students of Dian Nusantara University (UNDIRA), through the Student Executive Board (BEM), initiated a fundraising campaign titled #UNDIRAPEDULI for Sumatra Natural Disasters. The total funds collected were channeled through the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) of West Jakarta on January 30, 2026.

The aid was formally handed over by Mr. Muhammad Gilang Syaban, representing BEM UNDIRA, accompanied by Mr. Anton Kurniawan, S.P., MM (Head of the UNDIRA Student Affairs Bureau) and Ms. Sekar Ayu Putri Santoso (Representative of the UNDIRA Public Relations and Publication Bureau). The donation was received symbolically by representatives of PMI West Jakarta, Mr. Ujang Sungkawa, S.Km, M.Si. (Secretary of PMI West Jakarta) and Ms. Febriana (PDS Staff of PMI West Jakarta), at the UNDIRA Tanjung Duren Campus on Monday, February 2, 2026.

PMI West Jakarta expressed its profound appreciation for the empathy and trust shown by the entire UNDIRA academic community. This contribution represents a vital humanitarian action aimed at the recovery of affected locations and communities in Sumatra.

Geophysical research conducted by BNPB Aceh reveals that approximately 65% of the region—spanning 12 to 18 regencies—is currently facing a clean water crisis. This is due to the destruction of regional water utility (PDAM) networks caused by flooding laden with mud, timber, and boulders.

Despite the concerted efforts of local governments, as well as the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) and the National Police (Polri), to reconstruct clean water sources, only 69 borehole wells are currently operational out of an initial target of 121. Consequently, Mr. Ujang Sungkawa emphasized that the provision of clean water remains the utmost priority for the residents of Sumatra.

"The post-flood mud and debris have severely hindered public access to clean water. Therefore, PMI West Jakarta is currently focusing on the construction of several public facilities to meet clean water demands in affected areas. We deeply appreciate UNDIRA’s humanitarian donation and their support for this program," he stated.

It is hoped that this humanitarian initiative will provide significant benefits to those in Aceh, helping to heal the wounds caused by the disaster. Furthermore, this action serves as a lasting symbol that the university aims not only to produce knowledgeable scholars but also individuals of character, defined by humanity and compassion for others.
