UNDIRA Library Bureau Holds Book Review , Unpacking Philosophy of Life and Values of Humanity Amidst Modernity

Jakarta, November 12, 2025 - Literacy is humanity's most powerful way for understanding not only the world, but also themselves. Various literary works contain many perspectives on life that can serve as our guide in shaping our attitudes, ideologies, and worldview.

With a focus on enhancing the spirit of literacy, the Library Bureau of Dian Nusantara University (UNDIRA) held a "Book Review" event located in the Smart Classroom on the 5th floor, Tanjung Duren, West Jakarta. In this book review activity, the Library Bureau, in collaboration with the Human Resources Bureau, thoroughly dissected the work titled "Why Fear Loss?" ("Mengapa Takut Kehilangan?") by Prof. Dr. Komaruddin Hidayat, who served as the Rector of Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University (UIN) for the 2006-2010 and 2010-2015 periods, and is also a renowned Columnist in several mass media.

Prof. Dr. H. Suharyadi, the Rector of Dian Nusantara University (UNDIRA), who attended alongside the Vice Rectors I, II, III, and IV, and the 70 participants, represented the pride and joy of all attendees at this Book Review event.

He expressed that death and uncertainty are indeed the greatest trials, for both the old and the young. However, far more important is how we navigate our "journey home" and how we fill our lives amidst that uncertainty. This work contains immense value drawn from steadfastness and sincerity that inspires inspiration.

This aligns perfectly with UNDIRA's motto and vision, which is "Lights Your Future." After reading this book, we will understand that the author has successfully managed his destiny very well, turning challenges into light.

Mr. Imam Priyono, Director of Public Relations and Cooperation at UNDIRA, who served as the moderator for the book review, assessed that the content of "Why Fear Loss?" has very high relevance, especially for today's younger generation.

"This work successfully serves as a medium for self-reflection that curates the context of today's modernity. My first reaction was, 'This book is me.' Its content is very relatable, focusing on two powerful words: fear and loss. The book makes us realize that instead of being busy searching for what we fear, it is far more important to understand the meaning of 'loss' itself," he stated.

The book "Why Fear Loss?" was born from Prof. Komaruddin's reflection on a series of his life journeys. It explores his views on how to humanize life amidst the hustle and bustle of the modern world, especially in addressing one of the biggest problems of the younger generation: fear.

1

Fear is not just the fear of loss (whether of relationships, opportunities, or a sense of security), but also an expression of the burden to meet the expectations of oneself and those closest to us. Furthermore, today's young generation is also struggling against the fear of various uncertainties in the future. The combination of these fears, exacerbated by unrelenting social and economic pressures, often plunges them into depression and discouragement.

"A book is fundamentally a part of ideas and experiences poured out in the form of reading material. The book 'Why Fear Loss?' was written based on the many social interactions and conversations I have heard, and it was also inspired by the daily life patterns of the younger generation I encounter," he said.

"I hope that through this book, the younger generation will not only find their way in life but will also learn what humanity means amidst this modernity," he asserted.

Ms. Miranty Abidin, the reviewer who analyzed the work "Why Fear Loss?", expressed that the book is a heart-tapper. She continued that the book teaches us that loss is not something to be feared, but rather a lesson from Allah SWT for us to view the world from various perspectives.

She admitted that when reading the book review, she was reminded of the difficulties she experienced when losing a family member. However, amidst the trial, she affirmed that there will be a bright spot if we believe in the guidance given by Allah SWT.

"The theme of loss essentially invites us to make peace with ourselves and the reality around us. When reading this book, I was reminded again of the concept of sincerity and patience. Both are the main motivation not only to re-evaluate self-worth but also to find the strength so we can fully rise from the reality that tests and brings us to our lowest point," she commented.

Ms. Fadlun Umar, the reviewer who dissected the contents of the book "Why Fear Loss?", stated that this book is deeply connected to the philosophical values of Heraclitus. She mentioned that Prof. Komaruddin Hidayat's works are indeed full of hope and life motivation.

"If I relate the contents of this book academically speaking, I am reminded once again of a quote from Jalaluddin Rumi, 'You are the honored guest, do not weep like a beggar for a piece of the world.' Fear of negative things and unfulfilled expectations are actually plans from Allah SWT. Live as you should and let time heal us," she continued.

Prof. Komaruddin Hidayat closed the Book Review session by stating that fear is indeed not a negative thing, and with the right self-drive and a desire to see a brighter future, the work "Why Fear Loss?" does not focus on depression, but rather serves as a reminder that true victory begins with appreciation and gratitude to create an eternal soul of integrity and professionalism.
