Voicing Ecological Crisis, UNDIRA English Literature Students Launch "The Long Way Back" Anthology
Jakarta, October 24, 2025 - Literature is one of society's windows to understanding the world. Furthermore, literature also offers various life perspectives that tend to be relatable through their packaging in a written work.
Literature also plays a role in motivating readers through the delivery of relatable life narratives. These narratives provoke critical thinking while simultaneously leaving a deep impression on the reader.
In light of this, it is not surprising that literary works also possess compelling philosophical value. A prime example is Metamorphosis, Franz Kafka's 1915 work concerning alienation and social stratification.
Recognizing the importance of literature in opening doors to life and socio-cultural understanding, the English Literature Study Program at Universitas Dian Nusantara (UNDIRA) has successfully published an engaging book titled "The Long Way Back".
According to Ms. Nor Islafatun, M.Hum., a lecturer in the UNDIRA English Literature Study Program, "The Long Way Back" is a compilation of creative ideas from students in the Creative Writing course, which has been successfully published as a book.
Ms. Nor Islafatun, M.Hum., added that "The Long Way Back" is an anthology of short stories that reflects current social conditions, particularly from an environmental perspective. She also stated that the work could serve as an encouragement for both students and lecturers to increase their sensitivity to various contemporary social issues, including the environmental problems raised in the stories.
Jovial Sebastian Paranga, an English Literature student and a representative of the creative team behind "The Long Way Back", stated that although the book may seem dystopian, that is not its core nature.
"Although it may seem dystopian from its cover, this book contains stories about environmental and ecological issues occurring in society today. This book is not just my work; it is the collective pouring of ideas from 24 students through 24 different short stories. While it focuses on one main theme, the combination of different viewpoints provides an in-depth discussion, resulting in a work that is rich in perspective," he said.
Jovial revealed that one of the biggest challenges the team faced during the writing process was managing the plotlines and adapting the English to ensure it was easily understood by all readers. He added that in the future, if possible, he and the team intend to collaborate on another work featuring a different theme.
Indeed, literature is both a heritage and a foundation of humanity. Through its narratives, we do not just learn about life; we feel humanity itself—empathy for others, anxiety over injustice, and sensitivity to the environment, all of which are encapsulated in "The Long Way Back".
Amidst the onslaught of instant modernity, the role of English Literature becomes crucial. This book launch is tangible proof of its vital function: serving as a medium to think critically, feel more deeply, and, most importantly, voice humanitarian and environmental issues across cultural boundaries, ensuring our voices are heard in the global conversation.
