The Heartbeat of Academia: The Role of Research in the Modern Era
Throughout history, research has been an integral part of human civilization. Research plays a role in presenting solutions through creativity and innovation to the various problems faced by society, both by refining existing concepts and developing new solutions to established problems.
Research, especially in the fields of education and community service (PkM), now holds a critical role in national progress. This is because research conducted systematically and based on evidence (evidence-based) can become the foundation for sustainable community development. The dissemination and application of knowledge from these research findings are expected to form a sustainable and competitive social order.
Entering the modern era, the role of research has also expanded into several domains beyond its position as a foundation for education—some of which include:
-
Validating Information
The development of technology and information has made the distribution of knowledge easier. However, this ease of access comes with a significant challenge: the massive flow of misinformation and disinformation.
The existence of Artificial Intelligence (AI), which can primarily serve as an information databank, can become a tool for spreading misinformation if used in the wrong hands. In fact, it is claimed that as much as 90% of the data found in AI is engineered and fictitious data that cannot be accounted for.
Therefore, research exists to provide data validation and combat misinformation, ensuring it is tested and accountable. Moreover, in the world of education, research can contribute and produce work that enriches public knowledge.
-
Increasing Competitiveness in the Global Market
We currently live in the era of big data, meaning information is available in vast quantities and capable of supporting various needs. The availability of this data is, of course, raw material that can be further developed through research.
Friends of UNDIRA have surely heard the term Research and Development (R&D). Research in this context serves as a reference for analyzing existing data in-depth. The results of this analysis can then be used to improve performance, create innovation, and support strategic, data-driven decision-making.
-
Building Long-Term Stability and Sustainability
Research, similar to a network, can build a long-term and sustainable ecosystem. Research does not end at a single point; it can certainly be continued by other researchers, who will expand and strengthen the knowledge network.
This allows for the refinement of existing foundations to achieve an ideal outcome. One example is the refinement of earthquake-resistant building techniques, which represents a culmination not only in terms of safety and security but also in the advancement of civil engineering and construction technology innovation.
Research is not merely a task or a volume left on a bookshelf; it is the beating heart of an academic. Furthermore, in the academic world, research can be a bridge of knowledge connecting generations to create the innovation and competence needed in today's highly competitive world.
Understanding the importance of research in advancing the quality of education in Indonesia and supporting sustainability, the Institute for Research and Community Service at Universitas Dian Nusantara (LRPM UNDIRA) is committed to improving the quality of research among academics. As stated by the Vice-Rector I of UNDIRA, Mr. Ir. Margono Sugeng, M.Sc., at a recent seminar on "Tips & Tricks for Acceptance in Reputable International Journals," quality research is the backbone of the academic world and also serves to build future knowledge.
Through the application of relevant research and well-targeted community service programs, we can collectively create a social order that is smarter, more resilient, and globally competitive. This aligns with the core of the Tri Dharma Perguruan Tinggi (the Three Pillars of Higher Education), where education, research, and community service synergize for national progress.
