Ego and Discourse: The Importance of Insight in Speech Acts

The formation of sentiment is not only influenced by calculable factors such as economy and trade, but also by the actions and narratives we express. Humans live within a social sphere that enables us to communicate and interact, to build social networks. According to reports from the National Statistics Agency (BPS), Indonesia itself has a population of 284.44 million people.
Looking at this recorded population figure, it can be further examined that Indonesia possesses diverse literacy levels. With such diversity, many perceptions can be formed from discourse analysis.
As we know, fellow UNDIRA members, discourse is more than merely an expression of feelings or ideas, but also a component that can shape identity and public response. In communication, there is a subfield called pragmatics—which not only studies word structure, but also refers to the use of speech acts in specific situations.
Understanding this, we can draw a simple conclusion that how we speak and behave can shape perceptions (especially public ones) through the statements and discourse we provide.
Certainly, one's decision to act or speak can be influenced by subjectivity through ego. Ego is a fundamental instinctive trait possessed by everyone and can dictate human decisions, speaking style, and actions.
In communication and language studies, there is a concept called semantics that explores how a delivered message can have various interpretations. Additionally, there is semiotics, which emphasizes that the manifestation of attitudes, behaviors, and gestures can influence collective interpretation.
Every communication or action, however small, can yield consequences. Information spread without verification can damage someone's reputation or even trigger larger conflicts. Sarcasm considered "just joking" can trigger deep trauma for the recipient.
Fellow UNDIRA members, have you ever heard the saying 'actions have consequences'? Every speech act or action we perform may not have effects felt immediately, but at some point will have an impact in the future. Knowing this, it has become an unwritten rule that we must guard our speech acts, especially in this digital era with the ease of information dissemination.
The ability to communicate with empathy and wisdom is an invaluable skill in today's world. We face a clear choice: either become part of the problem by continuing to feed our ego and spread words that wound, or become part of the solution by fostering empathy and wisdom in every utterance we make. Moreover, understanding our diverse population, we as knowledgeable individuals must become more adept at selecting our words and using them appropriately according to context, place, and time. We must recognize that not every response will be well-received across all demographic groups.
No matter how high the knowledge we have attained or how far the positions we have reached, fellow UNDIRA members, let us reflect for a moment that this life does not last merely an instant. Every deed and word we perform constitutes an eternal trace that will become a silent witness to our life's journey. Therefore, let us remain humble, because true respect is not born from achievements, but from character development with principles and how we position ourselves before the public.
