Observing the Shift in Social Dynamics: Decrypting Postmodernism in Literature

19 November 2024

Through literature and the analysis of social dynamics, various elements of the real world can be expressed within literary works. Literature, as a medium of creativity, serves as a platform and a space for individuals to critique specific ideas within a work. To deliver constructive criticism, numerous visual and literary creations have been crafted to highlight flaws in existing concepts in society. From this desire to critique, the concept of Postmodernism emerged.

Postmodernism is an approach aimed at challenging traditional views and encouraging a mindset toward diversity and progress in life. According to Sarup (2011:11), advancements in computerization enhance society’s ability to discern and access information. This development “opens the eyes” of the public, empowering them to form arguments that can be expressed through various forms of visual or literary works, whether digital or physical.

Postmodernism in literature has evolved significantly from the early 1910s to the present day. One classic work exemplifying this is Franz Kafka’s Metamorphosis, which explores the alienation experienced by its protagonist, Gregor Samsa. In this novel, the concept of alienation is critiqued by addressing societal stratification and the pressure to conform entirely to societal norms, ultimately impacting individual lives.

Another classical work is Arthur Miller’s The Death of a Salesman. Although the piece leans more explicitly toward realism than postmodernism, its critique of materialism within the framework of “The American Dream” aligns with postmodernist challenges. The story emphasizes how materialism erodes humanity and social culture, themes that resonate strongly with postmodernist perspectives.

Beyond classical works, postmodernism can also be seen in modern digital creations, such as video games and animated art. One prominent medium that resonates with Generation Z is video games. This is due to their interactive nature and narrative depth, which capture the attention of younger audiences effectively.

Video games, aside from being a form of entertainment, also serve as a literary medium to express aspirations. For instance, Grand Theft Auto and Infamous: Second Son incorporate postmodernist concepts. These games tackle various social issues, from ethnicity to political dilemmas, using real-world references that are woven into their narratives.

According to Adi (2011:226-227; Catwell, 1976:23), postmodernism depends on social, psychological, and societal demands because the essence of postmodernist literature reflects social issues circulating within society. While it may appear excessive to many from millennial and boomer generations, postmodernism is an effective driver of social change.

Through the knowledge gained from the English Literature Program at UNDIRA, students are equipped with a deeper understanding of literary concepts, fostering critical and analytical thinking in examining and reviewing literary works and connecting them with contemporary contexts.

Furthermore, the upcoming 46th WEBINAR on November 23, 2024, titled "A Study of Posthumanism in Linguistics and Literature", offers students a valuable opportunity to delve deeper into concepts related to postmodernism.
