In Between Generational Dilema, Career and Gen Z: Salary or Experience First?

07 Juli 2025

In today’s fast-paced and competitive era, Generation Z faces dual pressures: economic uncertainty and increasing social expectations. In such a context, salary is no longer seen as a mere bonus—it has become a primary need that shapes career direction and future stability.

For many Gen Z individuals, especially recent graduates, working is no longer just about pursuing dreams or staying in a comfort zone. A job is a means of survival, a tool for building a future, and a form of responsibility toward their families. This explains the rise of the term “sandwich generation,” referring to young people caught between the burden of family obligations and personal aspirations.

The trend of job hopping—frequently changing jobs in a short span of time—has become increasingly common among young professionals. This behavior is often driven by the desire for higher salaries, faster career progression, and a healthier work environment. However, as highlighted by Forbes, job hopping also comes with risks: instability and difficulties in building long-term professional credibility.

A report from an article from Deloitte in May 2025 revealed that 48% of Gen Z and 46% of Millennials feel financially insecure. Without financial well-being, employees tend to lack a sense of belonging at work, which directly affects their job satisfaction and productivity.

In today’s job market, academic degrees are no longer the sole indicators of financial success in a long run. Employers are increasingly prioritizing soft skills, adaptability, social interaction, and problem-solving abilities. This means students and new graduates must begin to invest in themselves—by attending training programs, taking internships, and actively engaging in both professional and non-professional communities.

According to KRT Tamil Selvan, M.A., a lecturer in Communication Studies at Universitas Dian Nusantara (UNDIRA) who teaches Professional Image, social presence and self-presentation are valuable personal assets.

“In the age of AI and technology, beyond your knowledge, confidence is essential. Your appearance, attitude, and how you carry yourself in the workplace are survival skills. Technical expertise alone is not enough—social skills must also be refined,” he stated.

Imagine you're an IT graduate skilled in system development and coding—but if you lack communication or interpersonal skills, how would you explain your product or solution to your supervisor?

Enhancing social and communication skills, along with building self-confidence, makes it easier to network, earn trust from colleagues, and open new opportunities—including in salary negotiations. Consider personal development as a long-term investment for your career.

The classic question—“Should you focus on making money quickly or gaining experience first?”—can be answered more clearly when you possess strong skills and maintain good self-care. This combination leads to a healthy and balanced sense of self. Focus on building a personal strategy, rather than simply following trends or societal pressures. With steady growth, you won’t just earn money—you’ll also develop valuable skills and build meaningful connections within your community, both of which are essential for long-term success and survival.

While money can serve as a strong motivator, an obsession with it may lead to burnout, anxiety, and a loss of direction. Therefore, alongside developing skills progressively and consistently, it is essential for Gen Z to embrace the principle of slow living—recognizing that success is not a race to be the fastest, but a journey rooted in consistency and mental balance.

The desire to earn a good salary and achieve financial freedom is valid and natural. However, the journey toward that goal should include a balanced life, continuous self-improvement, and a deep appreciation of the process. Life is not a competition against others—it is a journey to become the best version of yourself.
